MMRV Vaccine

I am dreading taking DS for this vaccine. I am going this week but I am so nervous. The reason being is that both myself and my mother suffered from febrile seizures starting around 15 months. DS hasn't experienced a high fever before (fortunately) but studies show that if your immediate family has suffered from them, you are more likely. Then I read this- https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/Vaccines/MMRV/MMRV_qa.html which is making me even more nervous! I feel like I am going to be on edge for 2-3 weeks after he gets the shots.

Did your LO have a super high fever or febrile seizure after having these vaccines?

Re: MMRV Vaccine

  • my daughter had fever seizures from her UTI around 6 months. Scariest time of my life. But now i know what it is and how to deal im not super worried about getting it again from the vacs.

She has had fever seizures twice now. Not fun.

  • If I were you, I would definitely hold off on this vaccine...and wait until closer to kindergarten. We are on a very delayed schedule and plan to do the same, and I especially would if seizures are in your family history. Good luck momma!
  • My pediatrician doesn't do the MMRV combo vaccine for any patient because of the increase risk of febrile seizures.  I'd probably just do the MMR and do the varicella another time

This is what we did. He got the MMR at his 12 month and just had the chickenpox one yesterday (at 19mo.).

This.  We have our DS on an alternate schedule.  He got the MMR at his 15 mos. appointment (though he was almost 16 mos. at the time) and we are going to have them give him the Varicella at his 18 mos appt.

Also, if helps comfort you my pedi said that only about 1% of children get adverse side effects from MMR.  This helped to comfort my fears about LO getting sick from the vaccine and it turns out he did not get any side effects.

Yup- my doc doesn't do the MMRV because of the seizures. We got MMR and V on the same day as two separate shots. DD was fine.

This is what our dr does too!

  • Our pediatrician won't actually give DS the MMR vaccine because he has had Febrile Seizures in the past, he already runs HIGH fevers, he had a blood infection and ran a 105 and had a seizure then, cause it shot from 101ish to 105 in a matter of 30 minutes.

Even Teething fevers in our house are about 102-103. So we're waiting till he's closer to 3-4 to give him MMR

This, except we are on a very delayed schedule too - delayed forever, lol. But the MMR *IS* available seperately, even the manufacturer lies and says they "do not make them" seperately anymore, but they do. If you have a good pediatrician, ask him to please check into the local hospitals (or larger hospitals may only have them). Our pedi is on the board at Hershey Medical Center and says the hospitals absolutely have them available seperately.

That being said, I personally (obviously) don't think anyone needs the MMR vaccine, at least not before school age, and even then, especially if your child has a family history. Why risk something that could potentially seriously harm him, for a vaccine that isn't effective and for diseases he isn't likely to catch? Any child would be lucky to catch measles...it's a very minor disease and the child would gain lifelong immunity.
