Questions for successful pumpers

I just started pumping today and only managed to get 1 ounce this morning.  I have some questions for the pros.  Throughout the day do you just continue to fill the same bottle until you get to like 3 or 4 ounces of milk?  Do you pump after the baby has fed?

Re: Questions for successful pumpers

  • When I'm feeling up to it I pump right after Noah nurses and falls asleep. I usually get half an ounce from each side. I combine them, put them in a Medela tube and refrigerate it. I add to the tube until it gets to 4 ounces then I freeze it.

Noah is two weeks old today and I probably have 10 or so bags in the freezer. GL

  • I'm new to this too. I actually have only pumped 4 times, but I've gotten some great advice off the breastfeeding board. Be sure to check it out.  Anyhow, I was told to pump 30 minutes after my first morning feed and to pump to empty on both sides.  I don't have a supply issue so I have been able to pump 3 oz. in one sitting.  Apparently it's not uncommon for it to take time to get used to the pump (you know, before it will turn you on enough to leak, haha).  Some people pump once a day, some twice (once in AM and once before bed), and some throughout the day.

  • I'm also new (just started this past week) but it's been going well so far. My pedi recommended pumping after he eats so you don't take anything away from his next feeding. Now that he's in the middle of his 3 week grwoth spurt, I haven't been able to pump as much as I'd like, but that's OK - he's getting what he needs. Ideally, I pump after the first three feedings of the day, and once more again at night when DH gives him a bottle of expressed breastmilk (either at bedtime or the first middle of the night feeding). My supply seems pretty good and I can get anywhere from 2-4 ounces from both breasts combined at each session. If he only eats from one side, then I can easily get 3-4 ounces from the other. Good luck! I will say that having a break from feeding, even if it's only once a day, is so nice!

  • I pump at night. DD gets a bottle of expressed breast milk at 10/10:30pm, then when she next wakes between1-3am, and if she wakes again before 7am I'll pump then too. I give her a bottle of EBM first, then pump. Every time I pump I get 2.5-4oz from each side. Try eating some oatmeal, that's supposed to increase milk production. (Well, I've noticed on days I have a big bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, I get about an ounce more that night per breast when I pump.) Pumping at a regular time everyday will teach your body to make milk at that same time every day. My body is now used to breastfeeding every 2 hours in the day and every 3-4 hours at night, and my boobs will fill with milk automatically every 2 hours unless it's night time. At night, they fill as soon as I set the pump on my lap.

  • Thanks for your responses ladies.  You've all been helpful.  I didn't know there was a BF forum.  I just took a peek at it and it does have tons of info on it.  So thanks for recommending that!!

  • I'm an exclusive pumper, and from the day my milk came in, i was pumping 3+ ounces from each side 6-8 times a day. Now I'm up to about 4-5 ounces from each side. I pump into the bottle, pour both bottles into a storage bag, and I refrigerate every other bag, and freeze every other (since I'm pumping about twice what she eats now.)

  • For me it depends on when I feel the need t pump vs when DD has eaten. If I feel that I need to pump and its getting close to when DD neds to eat then I will just pump it all out and bottle feed her and store whatever she will not be eating. Other then that I will generally pump after she has eaten if I still feel full. Most of the time I will just have her eat on one side and then I pump the other for the freezer. I usually get 3+oz per side if its been a couple hours since I last pumped/BF.
