I work for a govt contractor, and I will definitely be affected if Congress doesn't get their act together this week and do something about the continuinng resolution. Anyone else depend on the fed govt for their paycheck?
Yes... DH works for the govt. And our daycare is in his building. So if the govt shuts down, he's at home and daycare is closed, so Alexa's home with him!!
However, it sounds like they are close on a deal for a short-term extension to the March 4 deadline. So I think a shutdown is now less likely... (I'm a reporter in DC and am following this very closely...)

Wow, that's great news! I'm hoping you're right! Right now I'm afraid to spend money or use any leave at work b/c I'm afraid I might need it in a few weeks!
This hasn't made the news in Aus, but I've seen it popping up on a few Nest/Bump boards. Can someone explain what's going on? I've read a couple of news stories but they seem to assume you have some back story to what's happening so I'm still not quite sure.

my short version, hope I am not over simplifying to the point of inaccuracy... current funding for the gov't goes through March 4. Repubs want to withhold their approval of any budget without certain cuts whereas Dems want to bridge the gap until there a long term budget can be passed. I think most news groups are now reporting that a middle group can probably work together to approve a gap budget that will contain certain cuts to keep enough people happy to avoid a shut down.

Alexa's mom can probably explain better, but to add to pp's post, Congress can't get their $hit together to agree on a budget, which was supposed to be done before Oct, but they apparently passed something temporary that runs out on Friday. This has been exacerbated by the midterm elections in November and the "tea party" movement. I know nothing else, lol, I hate politics!
