Trouble TTC

WWYD re: Clomid

So I conceived my DS on my first cycle of clomid a couple of years ago while seeing an RE.  The RE did all the necessary tests, monitoring, etc.  Fast forward to now.  We're trying for a second, but my insurance doesn't cover RE, so I did 1 cycle of clomid with my OB (I know, I know).  I decided it scared me too much, so I made an appt with an RE knowing I'll pay OOP for the monitoring, etc.  However, the first appointment they have is next week, and I will likely get my period tomorrow or Thursday, which means if I wait until my RE appoint to start my next round of clomid, it will be too late to do clomid again this cycle and this cycle will be a bust.  Should I just get another RX from my OB and start it knowing I'll get the proper monitoring starting next week or would you just accept that this cycle is a bust?  Do you think the RE will get super annoyed that I took the clomid before seeing him?  TIA!!

Re: WWYD re: Clomid

  • How long have you been trying for your second? Just because you had trouble and needed clomid with your first doesn't mean you will for sure have trouble getting pregnant the second time. What issues did you have/are you having? (You may know this and you may have been trying for awhile, but I've got no background info. from what you've posted.)

Either way, I would just wait to see the RE. This cycle might not be a bust. You can still try, just unmedicated. If you are not pregnant, then you can go whatever course the RE wants next cycle.

If there is one thing I have learned above all else on this board, it is not to take clomid unmonitored.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Just to clarify, I do not get periods on my own, so I do not ovulate on my own.  I have been dx with mild PCOS, and I have had 1 period since having my DS almost 2 years ago.  I am relatively confident that I cannot get pregnant without medication.

  • I agree with PP - just wait until your RE appt. to start anything.  I essentially had the same issue last month - since my first RE appt. was on CD 10.   And it turns out that I was ovulating on my own (although I didn't get pregnant last month).  And he is putting me on Femara instead of Clomid.

  • Just wait.  One more cycle won't kill you (while it may feel like it).  It's not worth the unmonitoring from your OB.  I personally have waited since last June when we got our Dx to start our first clomid IUI cycle later this month.  I've waited for urologists, I've waited for vitamins to work, I've waited to be able to afford OOP.  It sucks - but it's the smart, adult thing to do.

  • I agree, just wait. I was in the same situation- I really just wanted to get started. I thought about getting the Provera from my OB, and starting it- but I really wanted to make sure that my RE saw everything he needed and could call the shots from here on out. I went in, and he said that he isn't of the school where you necessarily need to have a bleed in order to start Clomid, and was willing to entertain the idea of doing Clomid late in the current annovulatory cycle. Upon vaginal u/s, he determined my lining was too thick and I needed to induce a period first. I am glad I waited to get his opinion, and it was good to get all of the b/w done first too. Good luck!

  • Are you sure your insurance won't cover it with the OB/GYN?  Only reason I'm asking is that we just went through Round 1 of Clomid with the OB/GYN who is also a fertility specialist and the ultrasounds and visits were all coded under "cycle management" and thus it got covered by insurance.  Medicine was not but the actual ultrasounds were.  We didn't know this and ended up spending $1500 OOP but now are getting it reimbursed.  Might be worth a call to the OB/GYN to get the insurance codes and call insurance to see.

I agree to the above. In my 3 Clomid cycles with the OB/Gyn, I was monitored by him in his office. My u/s were coded as PCOS, so the insurance covered it. When the last one failed- and my OB was not comfortable with continuing on with Femara, I made the decision to move on rather than another failed round of Clomid. (Although my new RE seems to think he can get me to O with a higher dose of Clomid- so we will see.)
