A place for toddlers?

What places would be good to take a 17 month old to?  I have a very active boy and I really need to get him out for some fun.

I was thinking Chuck E Cheese, but hear mixed reviews.  Any thoughts?

What are some similar places I could take him?  I live in South Lyon, so preferably something out this way.

Thanks!

  • Jungle Java is amazing.  Here is the website! I think the Farmington Hills one would be the closest for you.

  • I would avoid Chuck E Cheese on a weekend.  IMO, that place is a mad house and is better for older kids (like 5).  Since it is a birthday factory, there are multiple bday parties going on at one time, it is just nonstop confusion.  I agree that Java Jungle is a nice place.

ETA: just read you live in South Lyon, that's a little out of the way for you.

  • Chuck E Cheese wasn't too bad.  We took DS just before he turned 2 and he loved it.  There's a few games that he was able to do by himself.  Others we had to help him with.  He actually really liked the singing animals on stage, so we spent time watching them.  The birthday parties are kind of in their own section so they don't get in the way, then they have open seating for everyone else.  We went on a weekend- it was crowded, but at the same time we had no problem finding an open table or open games.

Most malls have some sort of play area- that's always good for letting them burn off energy.

Not sure in your area, but around here many communities have a rec center with an indoor pool and there's usually a toddler section.  Or else you can sign up for a class.

  • Maybe the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum?  I haven't been yet, so i"m not sure how much they'd have for your little guy.

I've been to the Jungle Java in Farmington Hills, they have a section just for kids under 3.  Though I've heard the one in Canton is bigger & better, so maybe check that one out.

Also the mall play area, I actually go to Laurel Park instead of 12 Oaks, I'd rather drive a little farther for a smaller area, less kids playing, and the parents watch the kids more there.

  • There's an indoor playscape off Milford Road in Milford (behind Holden's Party Store). It's called Kensington Mills Kidz Clubhouse.

It might be a little too big for your child now, though, it depends how much of a climber he is. I went to a birthday party there recently, and one little girl (younger than 2) was doing pretty well. There are some low climbing areas/slides and a big block area, as well.

It's cheap and very, very clean.

  • I'd say Gymboree but I don't think there's one near S Lyon, closest is probably Birmingham.

Does your parks & rec do any mommy & me classes?

  • In Farmington at Haggerty and 9 mile there is a place called the Goldfish Swim School.  They have family swim times on Friday from 6-8pm and daily around lunchtime.  For us (Mom, Dad, baby) it costs $10 :-)
