Every few days, DH and I have a really difficult time with DS. Hes 3 weeks, and 3 days.... DS is suffering with Acid Reflux... Dr has us adding 1 TSP of rice per every ounce of soy formula.... 3 oz per feeding... every 3-3.5 hours at a time.. and THEN when hes done eating, we have to sit him in an upright position for 30 minutes, before putting him back to bed. But last night, he just DIDNT want to go back to bed...
During the difficult nights, and into the mornings... I feel like DH and I are 2 insane fools. I cant tell you how many times it feels like we are so confused as to what happened the night before... We both SWEAR that we were awake/dealing with DS more, we have even argued with "No, I def got wayyy less sleep then you!"
looking back on those nights are so annoying. I guess DH and I are just REALLY bad at lacking sleep... never knew this until now. Either way, I hate those kind of nights.....
When do these sleepless nights get better? I really miss sleeping for more then 2.5 hours at a time!
Re: Anyone else feel dumbfounded?
DH and I really struggled with the lack of sleep too when we had DS. It was such a shock to our systems and we showered our DS with such love and patience in those long nights that we didn't always make sure there was a lot of love and patience left over for each other.
It does get better - but every kid does it at his own pace. By a few months old, DS was down to two nightly feedings. At some point he transitioned to 1 nightly feeding. DS didn't sleep all the way through the night until 10mos. Although, I'm sure that's daunting to hear, we also recognized the effect it was having on us and got way better at communicating and at coping with the lack of sleep.

What I would suggest in the mean time, Get some Gripe Water. I really prefer the Wellements Brand (online or available at Walgreens, Whole Foods, and a lot of other "vitamin-y" shops). Its ALL natural (not a single "chemical" in it) and REALLY REALLY REALLY works. You can add it right to the bottle or give it in the supplied dropper/plunger thing. This stuff works MIRACLES!
Make sure to shake it up before you use it and keep it refrigerated after opening.
I'd also suggest getting some probiotics (again, vitamin shops or whole foods). I prefer the refridgerated kinds - more live bacteria in them. Remember, your child just came out - all of this eating stuff is brand new to him and his tummy isn't regulated with all of the good bacteria he needs in there to process food properly. He's just building his flora (the good bacteria supply in the tummy). Its typical for ALL babies to be fussy and unregulated for a long while.
To give the probiotic, break open a capsule and rub your wet finger in the powder and let him suck it off your finger. 1 capsule 2 times a day is sufficient.
Lastly, do not (unless they have compelling true evidence to back up their suggestion) let any pediatrician woo you into switching formulas a bunch. Each formula should be given 2-3 weeks at minimum to see if it works. Switching them up on your baby will only make matters worse - its a whole new compound of foods to get used to, adjust to, etc.
I highly HIGHLY recommend you try the above suggestions for a couple of weeks and see how it pans out. Remember, some babies need to be stopped every ounce to burp (regardless of crying for more food) because they get too many bubbles and can't purge them with too much liquid on top - this can be mistaken for acid reflux issues.
I think you'll find the Gripe Water to be AMAZING! Honestly.
And most of all - be kind to yourself. You're learning right along side your DH and new baby.
HUGS!
Thank you for the suggestions!
I did get a second opinion, and then I spoke with my friends mother, who is a Pedi also... Both agreed with my Pedi.. due to the fact that my LO was not gaining any weight, and has actually lost more than 10% of his body weight from birth at his 2 week drs apt.
We used gripe water, and it did nothing.
The spit up was so much. He would drink his bottle with no problem, and then spit up the entire thing... only to be starving again in 45 minutes, and the whole cycle continued. Then when he would sleep, he would grunt so much and so loud, that he would continue to wake himself up all night... So then we had a very hungry, very sleepy baby all at the same time with NO relief for him in sight.
Rice may not have any nutritional value, but it is working in keeping the nutriants from the formula in his belly long enough to be digested correctly, and since then... he is a different baby with awesome weight gain, and no signs of having to be put in the hospital, where he will then have to be fed through an IV.
I dont know about you... but, I would rather take the gamble of rice cereal then having my LO fed through a tube in his tummy.....
While I gravely disagree with the methodolgy/safety (high high risk of aspiration with thickened formula)/etc, I'm happy you're finding its working. I'm really confused, however, at what you're looking to gain asking your questions here. If the method you're using is working so great, then what's the question? What's the "dumbfoundedness"? I'm not trying to be snarky AT ALL, I'm really honestly confused.
I wasnt asking a question per say.. just venting, and sharing my frustration with being super exhausted with having a new born, and how I feel dumbfounded after an exhausting night.... due to just being plain tired....
Thats all
