Too Early For Baby Shower?

So my EDD is June 24th. My mom and sister-in-law are throwing me a shower. When they asked about when I wanted to have it I just threw out the date April 23rd because I have a lot of other things going on on the weekends at the end of April/beginning of May. When they heard the date, they both sounded surprised and said that they thought that was kind of early to have it. What do you all think?

Re: Too Early For Baby Shower?

  • IDT it's that early.  I mean, you'll want to get the stuff set up while you can still move around, right?  And, if you know you're busy, it's best that you let them know which weekend works best for you so there's no problems!

  • I think it's okay to have it whenever you want to. It should really make a difference that I can think of.
  • It's on the earlier side (you'll be what, 32 weeks) but not out of the norm really. I had to have mine for DS at 26 weeks because it was before the holidays and I couldn't travel home after 32 weeks. Nobody saw a problem with it. I would think that people might just believe you are trying to avoid all the first communion/high school graduations/bridal shower/weddings that happen in May and June and be thankful quite honestly.
  • Sorry, I meant "shouldn't really make a difference"

  • I'm due June 28th and my shower is also in April.  My sister with no kids thought it was early but my sister with 3 kids said it was perfect.  You want to be sure to have everything you need.
  • Really? I'm so surprised they thought it was early. I'm due on June 14 (we're both having June babies!) and my friend is throwing me a shower the first or second weekend of April. She picked the date, but I thought it was nice -- I'll be almost 30 or 31 weeks by then, pregnant but not uncomfortable, and it's still early enough where I can assess what I still need to buy after receiving any shower gifts, before the baby comes!

  • I think it's really up to you.  I'm having two showers - one at week 24 and one at week 30/31 - because I live in a different state than where I'm originally from and I don't want to be on a plane all big and uncomfortable.

  • I'm due June 26th and my mom is throwing a shower for me April 15th
  • I have my 1st shower this coming weekend, I will be 27 weeks, and I think its a tad early. But it was the only weekend both my SILs would be home from school to share the day with me! Next one is not until the end of April, when I will be 34 weeks.

I think it really depends if you will have to travel a significant distance and what you think you will be comfortable with how early or late you have a shower.

  • I don't think that's too early at all. With DD I was due September 1st. My first shower was in May, second and third both in June.

  • I think that's fine! I am due June 5th and my shower is April 9th. I like that we will have some time after the shower to assess what we will still need. This is the day that worked out best for my friend that is throwing the shower for me, but I think it will be perfect!

  • Not too early at all!  I had mine at 32 weeks and my DD had a surprise arrival at 36 weeks.
  • I'm due at the end of August and my shower at home with family is Easter weekend, because that's the only time I'll be in town. Its just the way it works sometimes.

I think before 20 weeks is early, anything after that is fine IMHO.

  • I don't think that is too early...I'm most likely having mine in April as well and I'm due June 13th...

Keep in mind that is Easter weekend... but I don't know if that would keep people from being able to attend or not...you'd have to check with your guests

  • Eck, I didn't even know you could do one too early.  I'm due June 12 and I'm having one of mine this weekend.  I live across the country from my friends/family and since this is my last trip home before the baby they are throwing it for me now.  I just thought of it as doing what you have to do.

My friends here are throwing me one but obviously that one will be a lot closer to my due date.

  • I am due June 25th and my baby shower is going to be in april. However my OB suggested it to my mother because of the likelihood of complications due to a summer baby. no clue what that means but i am excited! Plus I like to plan...
  • Nah, I don't think it's that early. We're due June 13th and having our shower the end of April.
  • I do not get the idea that you have to be 38 weeks pregnant to have a shower!  OMG.  I had mine at 26 weeks because it was out of town, but it was perfect timing!  I felt great, looked cute, and had enough of a bump to rub.  Cut to 37 weeks.  Not so much...I was huge, tired, and I was in no mood to be the center of attention anywhere but the couch.

  • Im due june 4th and having mine April 17th, i wanted to have it April 9th and my aunt wanted May 1st ..i told her May 1st was out of the question i was not going to stress myself out and god forbid the baby comes early since DH and i were both 2 weeks early!
  • I'm due June 20th and having my 1st one March 27th, because we'll be visiting my mom and family out of town.

My second one will be April 23rd, mainly because my best friend is getting married at the end of May and I don't want to do anything during that month to take away from her wedding time (I'm the MOH).

  • I like planning ahead, so I think this is a good plan.
  • I'm due June 18th and my showers are both in March b/c we live far from family and friends and that's when we'll be driving home to see everyone.  I didn't want to do a 26 hour (1 way) drive (with 2 dogs also) when I am really big and uncomfortable.  And I have already been forcing myself not to buy anything until after we get back.  So if we would have scheduled our trip later I probably would have started buying things myself and ended up with duplicates anyway.

I'll be 26-27 weeks at my showers.  I think my bump is plenty big enough to give guests something to ogle at and rub (I've already mentally prepared myself for this) but I won't be too tired or uncomfortable.  When DH and I get home with our gifts we will have lots of time to set up the nursery and get whatever else we need.  A win-win in my book.
