Baby Monitors?

What is your take on the type of monitor you are getting? Second time Mama's, did you have a digital or audio and what do you recomend? I read in Baby Bargains that video monitors are completely over-rated but then also read they are a life saver when waiting until the baby's eyes are open before entering. What's your take on these?

Also, what brand would you recomend? I read Sony for audio and Summer Infant for video. Thanks!

Re: Baby Monitors?

  • i got the fisher pricer angel care one. i tested it out last weekend and it seems to pick up sound really well - i steered clear of the video and sensor pad ones because i was affriad that i'd be come obsessed by every little thing and just wouldn't relax....

  • I think ours is the Angel or Angel Care motion sensor monitor.  Some people say that don't want it because it causes too much anxiety, but I'd rather have it!

  • We have that Sony that Baby Bargains suggests and I love it. It has a voice activated feature that blocks out all noise until the baby cries, etc. I cannot use a regular monitor at all because I can't stand to hear the background noise after using the Sony. We've had it for two years and it works great.

  • Video monitor and could probably never use just an audio one. I think it actually helped us get DS to sleep through the night earlier because we were able to watch and see if he looked like he would self soothe and go back to sleep just by watching rather than running in there every time he woke up. It takes a two second click of the button to be reassured everything is fine. Now, it is just fun to watch him play in his crib in the morning waiting for us to get him (he's 2). I only know video though. It was Summer something or other.
  • With DD we still use a cheapo Graco.  Its audio only and does get some interference if its too close to another electronic object.  This time around we are buying the Sony Babycall on the recommendations of several friends.  I've gone almost three years with audio only so I see no need for a video monitor.  DD started sleeping through the night at two months old so being able to make sure she if she would go back to sleep on her own wasn't an issue for us.

This is what we've registered for!  It saved my friend's baby's life when he stopped breathing a few days after they brought him home from the hospital (he'd been in the NICU).
