Moms of more than one...

When did you tell your first DC about your pregnancy?

I have my first ultrasound appt tomorrow and we are hoping that we see the heartbeat. I know the miscarriage risk goes down significantly after you see the hb, but the negative Nelly in me will be worried that something is wrong probably until I deliver.

We are afraid to tell Lucas in case something goes wrong, and we have to explain what happened.  I know he recognizes that something's up with me. Normally I don't lie around all day and dry heave in the bathroom :) So I feel like we have to tell him something soon.

Thanks!

  • Thanks :)

I sort of made the announcement in a mass update post, so I dont' think many people saw it. Since I was so early (and still am), I was afraid to jinx myself with a big announcement post. See I really am a huge negative nelly!

  • We actually told Eli as soon as we seen the hb on the 1st u/s.  But it was a quick, we're going to have a baby brother or sister for you.  After the 2nd u/s we talked more about it with him and showed him the "picture" to look at.  He wasn't too impressed.  I will tell you when he really started to get it was at about 16 or 17 weeks we had a belly check with the h/b monitor and we took Eli.  Dr. Kirkwood really took his time with us that day and Eli got to spend a lot of time (like 5 minutes) listening to his baby sister's hb.  He LOVED that.

Oh and if you have the option where you deliver you should do the big brother class (our kids are going to spaced fairly similarly).  Eli LOVED that too.  The one at St. E you get a little "I'm a big brother" shirt to take home and a certificate of completion.  Too cute!  He loved learning to hold, swaddle, and put a diaper on his stuffed monkey (the stand in for his little sister to be).  Good luck and congrats again!

  • I had a loss between my two boys, so I was afraid to tell Justin or any of my nieces/nephews anything.  Justin was a lot younger than Lucas when I got pregnant with Tyler, so we didn't tell him anything until I was showing a little bit.  I was working full time then, so he didn't notice me puking or laying around like a slug since he was in daycare all day.

I'm really close with my nieces and nephews though, so we told them sooner.  After we had the preliminary bloodwork back (betas), plus had an ultrasound at 7 weeks where we saw the heartbeat, we went ahead and told them.

It's hard when you've had a loss to relax and enjoy your pregnancy, but it did get easier for me.  I hope the same happens for you.

  • I didn't tell Ryleigh until Christmas day, I believe I was around 9 or 10 weeks.

  • We told her right away! She probably didn't really 'get it' until later, but we were too excited not to share it with her.

  • awww.. congrats! I am so happy for you.

Rylee was only 21 months old when I was got pregnant with P so we waited until I was like 6 or 7months old to tell her.

  • We told DS right away, but he was not quit one and a half, so he didn't really understand the concept.

  • We never actually "told" her.  We didn't tell a soul (other than the doctor) until 13 weeks.  At that point we didn't hide it from her, but we also definitely didn't hype it up.  When I was about seven months pregnant we bought some books and started making a bigger deal out of it.  She didn't (doesn't?) have any patience, so I didn't want to deal with having her super excited for months and months.
  • CONGRATS!  I told DS right away :)  He was in the same room as DH and I when we found out!  He was LITTLE though but we talked about it the entire pregnancy.  Good luck!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!
