back carry questions

Hi there - regular lurker here.

I currently use a babyhawk mei tei and carry my 19lb 4.5 month baby in the front carry.  I tried out the back carry today and he feels really low (even after adjusting it several times) it also feels like a lot of the weight is being supported by my shoulders which hurts after a while.

I am thinking about getting a carrier that is similar to a hiking backpack where the weight is supported by your hips.

 Any suggestions?

Also while I like the idea of carrying him on my back I feel a bit worried that I am going to knock his head or feet into stuff...I kinda like being able to see him in front but he is just too dang heavy.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: back carry questions

  • If you could post a pic of your back carry, that might help us troubleshoot for you.  As for what carrier is comfy - lots depends on personal preference.  I prefer mei tais as I like to wear high on my back (and at 4 months you still want him fairly high IMO so he can see better).  If by hiking back pack you mean a frame carrier - definitely don't go there!  You may mean a SSC/buckle carrier like the Ergo or Beco though and certainly some find those more comfortable.  There are also mei tais like the Bamberoo and Kindercarry which have padded waists and offer more structure/support than the babyhawk does.  My siggy link has more info on both types as well as some brands to consider.

As for the bonking his head concern - you won't ;-)  Just like you learn to navigate with a back pack on, you'll quickly figure out how to move with baby on board.

  • Are you interested in using a woven at all? They really distribute the weight the best. I know what you mean about wanting him in front. Maybe try a hip carry. You're still relatively free to move, he can see well and you can kiss his nose. He has good trunk & head support, right? I think you may need that for a hip carry. I'm not sure because I just started doing them and DS is 10 mo. For me, all SSCs and MTs and RSs that I've tried eventually hurt my shoulder (old injury). The only thing that is 100% comfy no matter how long I wear it is a woven. However if you're set on a SSC, I have to say I like my Ergo better than my Beco. HTH As for head bonking, I'm ashamed to say I have done this. Just don't spin around quickly because it throws them outward with centrifical force. I bumped his bean on the sliding doors of a grocery store when I whipped around to ask DH a question. Also, don't bend in half at the waist or lean into anything lime a car or the dryer. Otherwise, ncbelle is right that you eventually adapt your proprioception to incorporate LO's head and body. :)

  • You might like the Ergo.  I have one and love it.  You can use it for front, hip or back carries.  I wear my 21 lb 14 oz 18 month old in it all the time for quite a long time and have no back, neck or shoulder pain.
