Anyone decide to ditch it around this age? I tried to limit it to car & sleep time only, but it seems like he whines ALL DAY without it. I don't think he's super dependent on it to fall asleep though. If I take it away all together do you think it will help curb the whining? I don't want him to become one of those older toddlers walking around with a paci in their mouth all day long.
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
At one point DD was waking up EVERY H+OUR for it at night, and had it most of the time during the day as well. Enough was enough, and we decided to quit cold turkey at 5 months old. It actually went extremely well for us! She started sleeping like a champ right away, and by 2-3 days she forgot it existed.

I haven't fully ditched it, but DD doesn't really express that much of an interest in it anymore. She mostly just chews on it if she has it, so I think we are just going to stop offering it to her since it will be easier now than later!
I JUST put DS down for his 2nd nap without the paci. It took me about 20 minutes to calm him down and get him to sleep. His morning nap went the same way. He kept fussing and crying for it, and I just stood over his crib and rubbed his forehead and patted him and sang to him. The first nap he slept for 1hr, 20mins. I'm hoping bedtime won't be that bad either. I'm planning on giving him a warm bath so he's completely knocked out by the time he hits the crib.
I've been putting it off for months, and I decided if I don't do it now, I will probably just let myself go to 1 year or longer and I don't want that. He only uses it to fall asleep, I don't give it to him any other time.
I tried Pantley's Gentle Removal Plan according to the NCSS but honestly I didn't have the patience to keep going with it. And that was at 4 months.
I suggest you go cold turkey. If he whines for it during the day, try distracting him with something else. Or introduce a lovey.
I agree with the PP that you should substitute the paci with something else. Anything that's soft like a paci and they can put in their mouth would seem to be a good choice. If it doesn't fit perfectly, like a paci, they probably won't want to keep it in their mouth all the time and eventually will grow out of it.
Just a thought though, Isaac was never really into his so he never got hooked.
We went cold turkey with DD1 at 8 months. We had two rough days and never looked back. I will do the same with DD2 in six weeks. I HATE seeing toddlers with pacifiers and it is much easier to do it before they turn one.
As always, it's up to you. But if you just enjoyed the peace that the paci provides now, you may find that your child will wean himself off the paci later on.
G used his paci regularly until at about 1 yr he started teething hard again. His mouth hurt, and he didn't want his paci for about a week. We put them away during that time, and he pretty much forgot about them. He may have just mentioned a paci once or twice at bedtime afterward, but he didn't cry over it.

If you didn't wait til 1 year old, then how do you know? Hearsay? Every child is different. In my experience, 1 year old was just fine.
