Cloth Diapering

How do you respond re: poop in washer?

I'm expecting our first in May, and we plan on CDing.  At my shower this weekend, I was chatting with some of my female family members about this, as we got a cloth diaper as a gift from a friend who cloth diapers their 3 kids and has for 2+ years.  They were totally grossed out by the idea of throwing the newborn pooped-in diapers right into the washer - "that's so unsanitary!"  "I can't imagine washing my other clothes in there after that!"  Etc, etc.  I wasn't sure how to respond, as I've never done this before.  How would you respond to these comments?

  • I usually respond with it's no different than if my LO had a huge blow out up the back and out the sides with a disposable diaper and got poop all over his clothes. It's no different than washing clothes with poop blowouts. I usually say back, it's not like I am going to throw out clothes everyime poop gets on them.

  • There's poop on clothes, too - even your clothes.  Unless you throw out all underwear after one use, there already is poop in your washer.  Besides, baby poop (especially before they start solids) just isn't that gross to me.

  • First, anything that comes in contact with a baby will be pooped on at some point. Baby clothes, your clothes, blankets, etc regardless of the choice of diaper. Do they throw out all those things? The whole point of a washing machine is to get things clean. What about their underwear or towels that touch their butt and therefore pick up fecal residue? Do they throw those away?

    This.

You could always ask them what they did with their own soiled underwear the last time they had a stomach bug or food poisoning.  ;-)

  • One of my friends asked this and I just told her EBF poo is water soluable so it can go straight into the washer. Then I told her once the poos become solid you dump/scrap into the toilet. That seemed to be enought for her. Her bf (soon to be fiance!) jumped in and said that he just bought a great new washer and started talking about the settings etc. I haven't really gotten the stink face from anyone about that.

Also that's what a washer does, it washes! haha. If your clothes get full of dirt and you wash them the next load wont be covered in dirt. Also baby's sometimes have blowouts where their onsies, outfits, bedsheets get covered in poo too and also need to be washed.

  • Well I respond that the washer is for washing.  For example, if you spill food (let's say chili) down the front of your shirt & then wash it with other clothing, do they come out with chili all over them?  No.  Same with diapers.

Also, if you are EBF then the poop is just digested breastmilk anyway.

  • I say a washer washes clothes, not stores poop. Once you have cleaned off whatever is on the clothes, the washer is ALSO clean.
  • There are lots of responses:

"Your underwear has traces of poop in it and you wash it with your other laundry"

"A baby is going to pee, poop, and puke on clothes, and we wash those in the washer"

"There is a reason for a hot water cycle"

    Etc.

  • Thanks ladies!  When I was put in the cross hairs, I didn't even think about the fact that most babies poop all over their clothes as well as diapers!

  • Yeah I grew up on a farm so most of cloths from doing chores ended up with manure on them from feeding cattle or pigs so really if I washed my cloths with cow crap my whole life a little baby poop isnt going to kill me :)

  • I say that washing machines were designed to wash dirty things.  And then I'd probably tell them not to worry b/c I wouldn't be using their washing machine to do the diapers.  LOL.
