How can I get him to wear a hat?

Last summer I had no problem getting Hayden to wear a hat. He was only 12-14 months and still pretty easy to get to do things. (Plus I could just put on one that had a strap on it and he couldn't get it off). He wasn't big on baseball caps but would usually wear one for a few minutes.

Fast forward to this year. Over the winter, I got him to wear his winter hat pretty good. I think he realized that his head was cold if he took it off. I have been trying to get him to wear a baseball cap or sun hat, kind of a practice for the spring/summer. He refuses. He tells me "NO" and then throws the hat on the ground. Now I would like for him to wear one this year but so far, no go.

Any tips on getting him to wear a hat without a strap? (Toddler hats don't have the straps that infant hats have on them.) Is it just a training thing or am I out of luck.

    I'm anxious to see what people suggest.  Even with a strap, DS can rip off the infant hats!  Plus, well, we really ought to buy him toddler hats anyway - poor kid has a melon for a head ;)

    is he old enough to appeal to his vanity?  "OOh, H, you look so handsome/cool/etc with that hat on"

    Or would he want to wear one if DH had a matching one on...or someone else he idolizes "all the cool kids are wearing hats.."

    or if it had a favorite character on it (you could either buy one or get a pin or patch with a favorite character on it...)

    The only thing that made hats cool to Elizabeth is that DH wears them and she loves doing whatever he does.

    He has various team ball caps and Elizabeth has toddler versions of the same teams, so he made it her "job" all summer/fall to get their hats every morning. We've done winter hats the same way -- we leave 2-3 out and anytime we leave, we tell her to go pick one.

    Now if I could just get her to leave her shoes on... :)

    I have tried the vanity thing. I will say "Cool Dude, you look so cool in your hat" but so far no go. We will have to try the thing with daddy. That I am not sure about, DH wears a lot of hats in the summer.

    I didn't think about finding one with his favorite character. He loves Thomas the train or Sponge Bob (he calls him Bob....we have DH's pj pants to thank for that). Off to see if I can find Character hats on-line.

    ETA: I found a Thomas baseball hat online. It is super cute but $15!! I don't know if i want to spend that much money on a hat he might not even wear. I will save the site and discuss it with DH tonight. Here is the site if anyone is interested.
