Washington Babies

Anyone suprised by...

the sex of their baby? As in, were you told one sex, but baby was born the opposite? I have a coworker that continually makes comments about not being set on the sex when you are told because the doctor could be wrong. It is one thing to say it to someone who is not pregnant (she has no idea I am TTC), but in my humble opinon totally wrong to make comments about it to those expecting, which I've heard her do to a couple coworkers. I understand her concern because her daughter was told girl and ended up having a boy, but keep it to yourself. I almost believe she jinxed her daughter because at her daughter's baby shower when she was opening up all the cute girl things, my coworker blurted in front of everyone "lets hope she actually isn't a boy." So wrong!

Does the doctor being wrong happen more than I think? Kind of freaking me out.

Re: Anyone suprised by...

  • I guess I could see ending up with a surprise if the Dr or u/s tech wasn't completely sure or didn't get a good look.  We have several copies of the "money shot" and there is zero doubt what that is in between his legs.  I don't doubt that we're having a boy.  I do think that's just somewhat rude to say something like that.  I know that it's probably happened in the past, but that doesn't mean it happens every time.  Those are the kind of thoughts that one can probably just keep in her head. :-)

  • It happens more with girls than with boys, but I don't think it's all that common.  I know it happened to someone on this board.  I completely agree she needs to keep it to herself.
  • That did happen to someone here.. but I dont remember who.

  • I made a comment about this when I was in labor, and my OB said it's extremely uncommon.

I'd be pretty annoyed by comments like that too; you're just not supposed to say stuff like that to pregnant women, they have enough to worry about already!

  • I have a cousin who was told three different times "girl" - but she had a boy.  This was 18ish years ago.

With both of my kids, the ultrasounds were correct, girl then boy.  This time there was NO MISTAKING this is a boy.  We have several junk shots to prove it.

What irritates the holylivingcrap out of me is that my MIL said she knew it was a boy from the 12 week facial profile ultrasound.  But I want to throatpunch her on a semi-regular basis so being irritated by anything she says isn't new.

Before our big u/s, we were talking about it with my MIL.  She told me not to have too many u/s because they would give me cancer.  And, after all, the only true way to determine baby's gender is by the heartbeat. *eyeroll*  There were no u/s back when she was having kids.  And the HB was correct with all 5 of her kids, apparently.  Well, our baby's HB was in the 160's for a long time, but has been in the 140's for the last couple of months.  Did he change gender?

I don't think she posts often.  Is it KAM80?  And I think I remember that her son's name is Jack.

Yes, I think you're right, it was her. At our ultrasound the tech said if he's wrong, it's more likely to say girl and have it be a boy than the other way around. With Max there was no doubt those were boy parts. At our ultrasound this time baby's legs were together the whole time but they were still confident it was girl. I wanted to know for sure so we just had a second ultrasound and this time were told absolutely girl.

LOL - probably!!  Or your MIL will bring it up the first time he picks up a doll instead of a truck...

  • Unless you have a DNA test or some kind of test where DNA testing is part of it, there's no real way you can know 100% what sex your baby is prior to birth.  There are any number of reasons why a girl would look like a boy and vice versa.

That being said, the u/s equipment is so sophisticated now that by 20 weeks (unless the baby is hiding the junk) you will be able to know for almost 100% certainty what sex your baby is.   By that point and going forward, mistakes are rare, especially with an experienced doc or u/s tech doing the u/s.

When we got the money shots on both girls during the 20 week scan, there was no doubt they were both girls.  Three lines = girl.
