circumcision woes

so we took ds for his 1 week appointment this past friday and the pedi explained to us that our ob did't cut enough during his circumcision.  she said it's fairly common and that she'll try to rectify it over the next few appointments by 'pulling down' on the skin, however, if that isn't successful, he will need to see a urologist and be recircumcised.  i have a gf who works in the nicu and she said this is WAY too common- apparently there's an ongoing controversy between the ob's and pedi's and who ought to be responsible for this procedure- who knew?  anyways, anyone else dealing with this sort of situation?  it certainly irritates me that this happened, however, i'm trying to remain positive and not harp on it as it could be a heck of a lot worse.

Re: circumcision woes

  • this same thing has happened to several of my friends and they had to take the boys back up to 4 times to get it right. Poor boys.

We did not circumcise Reid. None of the boys in my DH's family are.

  • yeah, that stinks! we didn't have any issues with ours but that reminds me of the conversation that the ped surgeon and i had while she was going over the procedure.

she asked me how much i wanted taken off. i was confused and asked what she meant. she said that lately, parents are asking for them to take a little more or a little less off than usual and now they ask if there is a preference before the procedure.

i told her we just wanted a "normal" circ done and that is what she did. ds was in the nicu and the pediatric surgeon on call did ours. on regular labor and delivery, some OB's do it and some pediatritians come down for the procedure.

  • Poor guy. Our pedi was happy with C's circumcision, but I have a friend that had that happen to her cousins son.

This is interesting to me! DS#1 was circd by an OB, #2 was circd by a pediatrician, and #3 was circd by a pediatric pulmonologist/surgeon.

  • I was unaware that any OB's even did this. We were told at our hospital we had to make an appt with his pedi to get it done, so we did the following week he was born.

  • thanks for the insight, ladies...comforting to know we're not alone.  hopefully the pedi will be able to correct it and we won't need to go through the process all over again!

  • We had all 3 boys circ'd and they were all done by the OB without any problems the pedi is very happy with all of them.

  • just FYI- we had this same issue with DS and you do not have to do it again if you don;t want to. Right now it looks like its alot of skin but he will grow into it and by age 2 there is a fat deposit right above the penis that will disappear and it will make the penis stick out a little more. We did opt to have DS redone because that is what we wanted and we did it as soon as we could when DS was 6mos old.
