I guess its two questions, actually.
I just experienced my first bout with pregnancy constipation. Nothing bad, but I'd like to head it off. What can I take?
I noticed a little spotting afterwards (confirmed was from the vag). Is it pretty common to spot a little after a BM like that?
I'm hoping so, cuz I've had about enough of this spotting crap. At least if its normal I know to keep an eye out to see if my repeated spotting coincides with BMs.

Re: TMI Question
Lots and lots of water. I also take Miralax from time to time when I need to get things going.
It's definitely "normal" to see a little spotting after a difficult BM. It happened a few times when I was in first tri.
If you had to really strain to have a BM then yes, spotting can and does happen. To head it off I take a generic version of colace and drink tons of water

I am starting to feel constipated also. I am not taking any meds, but definitely started to eat at least one apple a day and I drink a LOT of water. I haven't experienced spotting due to BM and don't have any advice. I hope your spotting goes away very soon. Did you tell your OB about this?
You can take Colace, but I find a Fiber One bar usually does the trick for me. Although I haven't been very stopped up so far.
The one time that I did have a bit of spotting (around 7 weeks) was after a particularly...difficult BM. I was found to have a SCH, which was aggravated by the straining, if you will. I have been very careful not to strain very much after that, and no more spotting!
I have been eating prunes and really spicy salsa (not together) they seem to help me get things going.
I haven't had spotting but I've read so many threads of others who have I'm sure it's normal, but I'm still sorry you're dealing with it, it must be stressful.
You may want to call your doc just for peace of mind--- I do remember they asked me about spotting after straining to make a BM---so I am pretty sure that is normal.
After my first bout of constipation this pg (had it last one too), I have made it a habit to take metamucil each evening (the free and clear kind you can mix into anything, it is awesome) and eat prunes regularly (I like the cherry or orange essence ones.) Just put extra fiber into your regular routine--- like taking a vitamin. You will be glad you did later on (and after baby arrives too.) GL!
This!
I have to run some errands today and will definitely be scoping out some of your suggestions. I think getting into the habit of taking a little something to prevent backuppage would be a good thing.
This might sound strange, but in a way I'm kind of relieved to maybe have a possible explanation for my spotting. How I'm spotting now is exactly how I did the other two times I've spotted this pg. Same color, same amount...everything. Since I wasn't straining for BMs, I didn't pay attention to if the spotting coincided with them...but in hindsight I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
To answer questions that were asked:
Yes, I'm positive its from the vag.
Regarding the OB call, I'm kind of in the nomansland between OBs as I wait for my first appt with the new office. Technically I'm considered in their care from my first appt to after delivery, but I've not had an appt with them yet, so right now I'm not positive who to call.
