VBAC

GD/Big Baby

Hi all. I don't post often, but I'm hoping for a VBAC. I had an ultrasound last week, and was told that the baby is "humongous." She's 4lbs8oz at 30 weeks.

I went and took my sugar test that same day, and I find out the results tomorrow.

Now first, I know the u/s could be wrong. But for the purpose of my stress, I'm going to take it at face value.

Second, If I do have GD, I honestly don't know anything about it. And I'm sure once I get more knowledge I'll feel better.

But I'm curious if anyone had GD/a big baby, and was successful? I'm switching to a MW practice tomorrow morning, regardless of the results of the sugar test. I know my OB would push for a RCS because the baby is big. They weren't too thrilled when I asked for a trial of labor, at all. So add this to it, and I know they won't be supportive. So that's officially swayed me to make the switch.

I guess I'm just looking for something positive. I'm not afraid of birthing a big baby, although obviously I'd prefer her to be 6lb7oz like my DD was (haha), but I'm not sure if there's risk to her if she's too big. And how GD affects a VBAC attempt.

Re: GD/Big Baby

  • Don't know the stats but I do know that GD might have lower VBAC success rates.

FWIW, my first was over 10 lbs (I did not have GD).  When I wa interviewing providers for my VBAC, the OBs kept telling me that they'd let me try but because my first was big, they figured my second would also be big and they would "closely monitor me" and then decide if I needed a RCS for a large baby.  I saw the writing on the wall there and chose my midwife, who told me that, while it's possible that my second might be big, that isn't a definite.  And she also saw no reason to attempt a VBAC no matter what the size of the baby.  DD was born via VBAC at 8 lbs, 3 oz.  So, with the right provider (and even with GD- if you stick to the diet- my friend birthed a 6 1/2 baby when she had GD) you should still be good for a VBAC!

  • I VBAC'ed a GD baby in December.  Do you have any specific question?

Best advice I can offer, is that you need to follow the diet as religiously as possible to keep your numbers under control (they'll refer you to the dietician and diabetic counselor if you fail the 1 and 3 hours).  Exercise at the least as much as they advise (I think they want you to walk at least twice a day, or after meals to bring sugar levels down) and more if you can.  And try to keep your weight gain within the guidleines your doctor recommends.   Aside from my placenta being in not so great shape upon delivery, my pregnancy was as if I never even had diabetes.  There's no real telling if the GD degraded my placenta or if it was because I was overdue (40w3d-which would have actually been closer to 41w based on my dates rather than the early ultrasound)
