Opinion: BF and what bottle to use

I am planning on BF and want to pump also.  I was told during breast feeding class that the First Year's Breast Flow bottle was highly recommended.  Anyone use these before and what did you think?  Also have Dr. Brown on my registry (wide mouth).  Any opinions for bottles while BF would be great. Thanks

Re: Opinion: BF and what bottle to use

  • I planned to BF and bottle feed and got playtex drop ins.  Turns out I had to EP so he was bottle fed only.

  • I'm also going with the drop-ins and I registered for tommee tippee's. I heard they were really good with nipple and feel of breast.

  • Your kid will decide what he/she likes best.  My LC with DS highly recommended Avent and thats what we used when he got a bottle.
  • my husband used the dr. brown's with ds while i was at work and i nursed him when i was at home.  ds had no problem switching back and forth and we nursed for two years.  the nurses in the nicu had suggested the dr. browns to cut down on gas, so we used them.  a lot of people will tell you that they have SO many parts, but really it's only two more parts than normal bottles- and i'd gladly wash two more little parts each time if it had the possibility of cutting down on crying and spitting up because of gas bubbles.

  • I am going with the Breastflow bottles also.  They are highly recommended for BF'ing.  I took a BF class and they were recommended by the lactation specialist, plus I've done a bunch of research.  Of course, I'll be open to whatever LO decides she likes!

  • Dr. Browns were not good for us. The flow on the lowest level was quicker than what I could keep up with, and DD developed a preference for bottle quickly!

We ended up with a mix of Playtex drop-ins and Avent. This time, I am using Breast flow bottles

  • We are going with Avent and Dr Browns. One of the reasons we are CDing is to cut the amount of waste we create, so I feel like drop-ins wouldn't work for us, but I have heard good things about them.

I think the biggest things to remember when choosing bottles while breastfeeding are 1) pick wide based nipples as these most closely replicate the breast 2) choose the slowest flow nipples that work with the system to best mimic the flow of milk from the breast

  • Obviously, this is a very personal decision (usually made by baby, not you), but I used the Madela bottles for probably six months or more, then switched to Dr. Brown's. Looooove the Dr. Brown's as they are almost exactly the same nipple as the Madela and they were the only ones DD would take.

  • After trying so many different bottles when my dd was 3-6 weeks old (Born free, drop-ins, Dr Browns, Avent, Nuk-literally we tried them all) we lucked out with the breastflow bottles. It was the only bottle she took right away and didn't scream the entire time like she did with the others. I have heard most babies have no problem switching back and forth, but dd was incredibly picky. I think she liked the breastflow because they actually have to compress the nipple to get milk so it mimicks nursing, unlike a regular slow flow nipple. I intend to use them again this time.

  • If all goes well, I'm planning to pump with a Medela PISA and registered for some of their storage bottles.  We are also going to try out the Playtex drop ins.  I like the idea and convenience of not having to wash bottles all the time.  As long as she likes them, we'll go that route.  Otherwise, we'll just keep trying new brands until we find a winner.  Good luck!
  • I EBF'd DS and he would only take Born Free bottles.  They worked great for us and never leaked.  Planning on using them again for #2, with new nipples of course.

My sister just had a baby in Jan and she has tried 5 bottles now I think, and her LO prefers Tommee Tippee.

I have also heard good things about TFY Breastflow.

It will really depend on the baby.  GL!

  • When I started going back to work after DD was born the only kind of bottle she wouldn't fight was the Breastflow bottle. I plan on using them again this time around.
