Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Can somebody explain The Children's Place sizing to me?

I went to Pumpkin Patch yesterday and they seem to have the same sizing scheme.  (Another customer there told me it was European sizing.)

Anyway, I always see 0-3 mths, 3-6, 6-12, 12-18, 18-24, 2T, then 3T.  They didn't have a 2T.

Theirs is 0-3, 6-12, 12-18, 24, 3T.  The lady working there wasn't understanding why I needed this explained and got kind of irate with me.  Basically she was telling me that 24 was the same as 18 - 24.  Then I asked what 2T would be (i.e.  what they would wear between 24 and 36 months).  Her response was that obviously 24 months is 2 years so it's the same as 2T.  I asked her if they really expected kids to wear the same clothes from 18 months to 36 months.  "Well, no.  Of course not!  36 months is 3 years!"  OK, so did they expect kids to wear the same size from 18 to 35 months.  "Well, it depends on the kid, not all kids are the same size."  I gave up after that.

Sorry, that turned into a little more of a rant than I meant.  I'm sure there is some easy explanation, but she didn't seem to know it.

 Thanks!

  • I don't see a problem. First off you just get the size that fits, the "months" on clothing is just a guesstimate, it's like diapers. Not all 25lb kids will wear the same size. If they have 12-18, 24, and 3T.... in theory when they are 2, they'd wear 24 month size.  When they turn 3, 3T. What do you do from 18-24? Pick whichever size fits. I don't really see why you are annoyed.

  • Most children's place clothes run a little large.  The 18 months still fit at now 22 months, but so do the 24 months.  I just bought a bunch of new 24 month short sleeve shirts for him (they have fantastic sales on their website) and I expect him to be able to wear them until at least mid summer.  He will be 2 in April.  I think once they are over 9-12 months or so it is normal for them (especially boys) to end up moving up sizes about 6 months ahead of time.

  • I think the answer is that you really just have to go by your own kid and not by the standard sizes.  Allie is 15 months but she wears 24m/2T clothes and 18-24 at Gymboree.  I don't expect her to wear the same size from 18-35 months, but I also know that she's 15 months now, not 24 months, and that's what size she wears, so it's not really done by the actual number of months, it's more just a range.  Obviously even the range of 18-24 months is huge.  My friend's 13 month old is wearing 9 month clothes.  The sizes are all over the place.  You just have to buy what fits your kid.  Smile
  • Usually Children's Place clothes have always run true to size for us.  My DS has 18month pants that are too short so we got 24 month pants from them. They are about 3 inches longer than the 18month. To me, that seems like a huge jump in size. I even tried to shrink them a little and nothing! So if someone knows, it would help me too!

  • haha I love your conversation with the sales lady. Nothing is more frustrating when someone doesn't "get" what you're asking.

As far as their sizing I just guess.  DD is 22 months right now so I'd buy the 2T.  The pants are a little long and big but they have a pully thingy in the waistband that makes them fit there.  I just roll up the pant legs.  I always buy the next size up (rather than buying 18-24) b/c I want it to last longer and I'll get more bang for my buck that way :)

Maybe it is just me or the way I'm asking it. Embarrassed  I wasn't really asking about sizing. I was trying to buy ahead a little bit.  DS has been pretty consistent about wearing the size the clothing says at the "right" age or just a tiny bit later.

The question I have is because they have one less size (no 2T) than all of the other places from what I can tell:

    Other Places

    PP/Children?s Place

    Age (OP/CP)

    12-18 months

    12-18 months

    12-18 months/same

    18 ? 24 months

    24 months

    18 ? 24 months/same

    2T

    24 ? 36 months/ ???

    3T

    3T

    36 ? 48 months/ same

  • I'm confused.  The Children's Place sizing goes 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 12, 18, 24, 3T.  So 12 is 9-12, 18 is 12-18 and 24 is 18-24.

  • Even in other brands, there's not much difference between 24 months and 2T.  2T tends to be a bit longer, while 24 months have more room in the seat of the pants for diapers.  They are essentially the same size (since 24 months and 2T are the same age).  The months are just a guideline, which is why they include weight/height info on the tags as well.

  • I understand what you're saying.  There is a difference between 24 months and 2T, aside from the whole 'age' thing.  Those sizes fit differently.  I too noticed tcp didn't have 2T when I was buying blanket sleepers for next winter.

Kids clothes sizes can be just as tricky as adult clothes.  For instance, if I buy something 6-12 months in the 'newborn' section, I think it's cut smaller than the 6-12 months in the 'baby boy' section.  Don't get caught up on the age vs size though.  My LO is 14 months and in 18 or 24 month clothes...depending.

  • Children's Place clothing does not come in a size 2T, only 24 months. The sizing goes up to 24 months and then jumps to the 3T size. My friend's son was able to wear most 2T sized clothing, but TCP's 24 month sized clothing was a bit too small for him. So, the sizing must be slightly smaller than the average 2T sizing. I would use the sizing charts that you can find on TCP and see how far away your son is from the current sizing stats for 24 months. If he's already within an inch or two of the 24 month size, then I'd probably forgo buying TCP brand clothing, until he's in a 3T.

  • I get you. DD received some 24 month pjs and dresses for Christmas, and they are already getting a tad snug. There's no way they'll last her through the summer. 3T is too big, so I just won't buy from them until she fits into the next size up.

  • I find CP to run really small. DS is in 18-24 months at Gymboree and I just ordered him 24 month shorts from CP for the summer and had to return them for the 3T.
  • IMO, TCP sizing gets weird around 24 mos....for girls, it's seems to run short (shirts only) and wide. Both my girls are super tall but DD1 is tall and skinny vs DD2 who is proportionate (% wise). For DD1, TCP hasn't fit her properly in a long time. For length in shirts, she's a 5T there...for width, she could fit into 24mos, even 18 months. For DD2, stuff still seems a bit wide, but at least it's ok in the length so far. At 16 months, she can fit into both 24mo and 3T from there.

Anyway, don't buy too much in advance because you never know how LO will grow and what brands will fit right as he grows. I bought DD1 a bunch of 2T clothes a while ago, thinking that should last her awhile...then she outgrew 2T in about 3 months. I could have skipped over 2T to 3T. Honestly, from the time she turned 2 until 3, she went from wearing 24mo to 4T. So much for those sizes as they get older lasting longer! Didn't happen for us.
