Anyone have heavy bleeding during L&D?

I had heavy bleeding during labor and had to be on iron pills for a few months afterwards.  Did anyone have something similiar and lose alot of blood during labor/delivery?  If so, did you have another LO and did the same thing happen?  They're not sure why I bled heavily.  I started spotting after the internal exam on the day I went into labor, so they thought maybe my placenta had detached itself (not sure if this was the case though).  I'm just looking for others who had something similar happen and what your experiece was if you had another LO.

  • I hemmoraged (sp?) after my c-section and had to take iron pills too.  Haven't had another lo yet but am curious to the answers you get here. I felt like crap for a long time afterward from the blood loss that is for sure!

  • I had a very similar experience. Started bleeding after my 40 week internal exam.  They admitted me and put me on pitocin while they ran labs for placental abruption.  That was not the case, and the dr. speculates that I had scar tissue on my cervix from a previous procedure (colposcopy) that detached in the exam. They said it's not likely to happen again since the scar tissue is gone.

  • I hemorrhaged during my c/s with my oldest. Had to have another c/s (Crying) with my youngest, but it was night/day different from the first. No excessive bleeding at all.

  • Did they test you for a placenta abruption?  I had an almost complete placenta abruption during my pregnancy that resulted in an emergency CS.  Placenta abruption means that the placenta has detached from the uterus and bascially the Mom is bleeding out and lack of food and oxygen is getting to the baby.  Some go undetected others are more severe and life threatening (like mine).  If it was an abruption I know a lot of people choose not have to anymore kids.  The odds of it even occuring is 1% (assuming you eat right and don't use drugs).  The odds of it reoccuring is 10%.
  • I hemmoraged pretty badly after I delivered DS. It took my doctor about an hour to get the bleeding somewhat under control.  To this day we are not sure why it happened, but I swear I did not feel "right" for weeks after delivery (my closest friends and family told me I was almost a grayish color for a few days).  I was extremely nervous about it happening this time around again, but my OB assured me that the chances of it happening again are super slim.  I am trying not to think about it this time...

  • i had hemmoraging after DD and ended up with 2 different blood transfusions.  like PP said above, my skin was gray and had zero color.  after the1st transfusion, i felt better and had color in my face.  they didn't have me take iron pills, probably because of the iron.  my Dr isn't sure why it happened, but is telling me that there's a very very small percentage it will happen again...very unlikely.  i'm going to ask her at my 16 week appt this week if there's anything we can do now to prevent it from happening.  i might start taking iron now (i was anemic when i was pg with DD).
