Mucus in LO's stool??

Anyone's LO ever had what appeared to be mucus in his or her stool?  My LO has had a cold for almost a week with coughing and chest/nose congestion.  Last night he didn't sleep much at all and has had a temp of 99.9 - 101.2 all day.  He has been sleeping most of the day, and has had wet diapers.   He has had one diaper that contained stool that was green and there appeared to be a clump of mucus in it.  I'm kinda freaked out about the clump.  The green cold doesn't bother me much as his stool has been this color since starting a new formula a week ago.

Re: Mucus in LO's stool??

  • I read that the combination of mucus and green poo can mean an allergy usually dairy- if you just started a new formula a week ago maybe it is something in that formula? I would say if it happens again to call and ask the dr?!!

  • Thanks for the reply.  The new formula is Alimentum which has turned his poop green, but today is the first time I've seen mucus.

  • When babies (or anyone, really) has a cold, mucus can and most likely will drain into the stomach, a lot of times it ends up getting vomited out in the case of babies, but I do imagine it could be passed when your kiddo poops, I'd at least give your doc a call, no one ever regretted getting at least a phone consult, and your doc could probably give you more insight.

  • We have noticed that DD's stool is kind of mucusy - we plan to bring it up at her 2 mo. appointment on Wednesday.

  • DD has had green mucousy stools on a couple of occassions and her ped said that it was perfectly normal. She said the only thing to worry about in regards to poop was if it was red (blood), black or white (there is some medical condition that can cause white poop, weird I know) otherwise for a breastfeed baby (with no other symptoms) its normal and fine.

However if you do suspect a milk allergy I would check out the following article from kellymom:

    https://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html#signs

She did tell me that should DD ever have a fever over 100.4 that she would need to be seen immediately so that would be of more concern to me than the mucousy stools.

Hope she gets to feeling better soon!

  • My LO had mucus in her stool and also grunted/strained in pain. My doc said she probably had an intolerance to milk (that is what mucus can mean). I cut dairy out of my diet, I am EBF, two weeks ago and she is a completely different child. We noticed an initial change after just a few days. Talk with your ped., but I'm sure all you need is to change your formula. GL
