Those who've dealt with RSV, what were the symptoms?

I feel like I'm manifesting phantom symptoms in DS. But I just can't tell what's going on with him. If you're DC had RSV, what kind of symptoms did they have?

He's got a fever. Not too high (100.4), and it goes down with Tylenol. But even with meds, he has a fever (99.5 with meds). His nose is really stuffy, and snotty (mostly clear and yellow). He's got a dry cough, and when he cries he sounds hoarse.

I'm really thinking it's just a cold. But of course, I would have bet $10 that he didn't have an ear infection 2 weeks ago, and it turned out to be a double ear infection. So all I can think of is what if it's RSV? And of course I feel like I call the Pedi if DS looks at me funny. So I'm trying to just manage his symptoms right now, and avoid having to call.

  • Of course every child is different, and RSV can often look like a cold, but it just sounds like a cold to me.  A lot of kids that we are seeing with RSV right now will have increased work of breathing, trouble breathing, breathing fast, maybe some nasal flaring or belly breathing...but those are some of the most extreme cases.  Unless you see any of the symptoms that I listed then there is not much they would really do for a child with RSV. good luck

  • It's a virus, so there isn't any medicine or anything to do for it unless you get to the extreme case where the child can't breathe. Of course we got to that point and spent a weekend in the PICU. But the same doctors had seen him 3 days before, diagnosed h with RSV and sent him home. Symptoms: short, shallow breaths. Sounds very congested, gurguly. Fever. Cole was very lethargic. Pale skin. Hope you don't have it.
  • I'm glad you posted this. This is exactly what Sam sounds like right now. We called the pedi and they basically said the same thing. Sounds like a virus, look for labored breathing, flared nostrils, sucking in around the ribs, etc.

I will be thinking about your boy and my own and hoping all of us are past this soon.
