Nervous for second appt

My second appt is tomorrow, but it will be the first time we get to see the baby, and hear the heartbeat.  It will also be the first time they do any blood work Sad  I am scared of needles, and hate having blood drawn.  It always makes me so nervous, and having the blood drawn makes me feel terrible!  Any other ladies out there in the same boat?  And if so, do you have any mechanisms for helping you cope with your fears?  I know this won't be the last time I get stuck during this pregnancy, and I don't want to be dreading an appt which is otherwise very exciting!

  • Mine is also tomorrow and I am also super nervous.  I hope my little bean is doing ok!

PS, I totally cried when they took my blood at my first appointment.   And my husband was even there!  He's teaching tomorrow so I hope I can keep it together.

  • I used to dread it too, and have to lay down for each draw so I didn't pass out. Over time, I've learned to just not look and try to have a conversation with the phlebotomist. The ones at my office know me by now since I've had so much done! Good luck, remember it only take a bit and then it's all over- and it's just a pinch, no more pain that that!

  • I used to be terrified of needles, after my first pregnancy it isn't such a big deal anymore. (I went through a LOT more painful things than a needle stick) The biggest thing is not getting yourself all worked up about it.

  • I always feel sick after having blood drawn; sometimes I pass out. I don't have anxiety, my blood pressure just drops when I bleed. I told the tech this time, and he took me to a room with a recliner. I laid back while he got ready, drew my blood, and put everything away. We made small talk. I took deep breaths. Afterward, my husband bought me some chocolate. It was really the best blood draw I've ever had. Also, pregnant blood draws have always gone better for me - I think because of the increased blood supply during pregnancy.

  • I have my second appt on Friday for the same things. I used to be terrified of needles, to the point that my regular doctor's office knew to have me lay down and brought me sprite and crackers. I actually passed out waiting to pay one time. It's a mind thing for me. Ask the nurse if you can lay down while your blood is being drawn and let her know you're nervous. Don't look at your arm and talk to the nurse while it's happening. And whatever you do, don't move suddenly afterward or you might get dizzy and possibly pass out. Consider taking a carbonated drink and crackers with you as well. You'll do just fine. Good luck!! Smile

  • i'm terrified of needles, which no one understands because i have a half sleeve tattoo and piercings to boot. my advice with getting blood drawn is to drink something with caffeine and lots of sugar (mountain dew is always my go to drink for this). i know, it's not the best thing for you since you're pregnant and all, but it will make your chances of passing out or even getting light headed really really low. the phlebotomist will thank you in the end!
