If you have an SUV.....

Where is your carseat at? In the middle of the backseat, or one of the sides?  It is safer in one spot over another? I always had his infant seat in the middle, but now I have his convertable seat on the passager side...(the middle of my new car doesnt have latches)  Just wondering if there is a safest place it should be?

Re: If you have an SUV.....

  • We have ours in the middle of ours. I've heard though that if you can't put the seat in the middle then to place the seat on the driver's side because if you get in an accident you tend to move the car in a direction to deflect the impact from yourself naturally. Never seen any study on it. Just the advice I've heard.

  • We have it on the right side behind the passengers seat in our SUV. If we had his seat in the middle - the seat would be crooked if we had it in the middle with the way the latches are. We install it in the middle if we have him in the car though. It should say in your manual where they recommend the safest spot for a car seat to be. I believe it varies by vehicle.

  • Not sure what type or size SUV you are talking about...  We have a Chevy Tahoe and ours is on the back passenger side.  There is not enough room for DH or I to scoot our driver seat back and fit the conv. car seat in while it's rear facing.  We have no middle in the back since they are captains chairs so we don't have any other options.

  • I have always heard the middle is the safest.  But I think it depends in your car.  In mine, DD#1 is in the middle and she is in a high back, 5 point harness and DD#2 is behind the driver R-Facing convertable.  That is the way the latch system is set up in my SUV.

Same for us.  We have captain seats so we had to choose one, so we chose passenger.

  • we have an armada, with 2 kids. our soon to be 5 yr old is in a booster (behind driver) and our 13 mo old is in a 5pt harness/forward facing carseat (behind the passenger).
  • Latches aren't any safer than using the seatbelt. I had Ds infant seat in the middle. I've heard that's safer for side impacts. I used to have his convertible in the middle until I found out from the dealer that I shouldn't have a car seat in the middle due to how my back seats fold down. So I moved him to the drivers side.
