Cincinnati Babies

constant illness + eczema + fire engine red behind = allergies?

I am at a loss on what to do for the boys.  They are still sick.  I feel like they are always sick!  Right now we are battling a nasty cough, runny nose, and bad sleep.  They went to the doctor earlier this week because I thought they had ear infections.  They were off balance, screamed when we laid them down, and were pulling at their ears.  Classic ear infection, right!?  Nope.  The doctor said their ears look fine.  She went on to say she doesn't know how we are going to be able to tell when they ear infections because they have all the signs but their ears are clear.  Great.  Don't get me wrong, I want them to be ok, but it is so frustrating not knowing what is wrong and not knowing how to help them.

Last night I was talking to my MIL about the boys.  She is a nurse and is really surprised that the doctor didn't find anything.  I happen to mention to her that I have been wondering if they have some kind of food allergy.  She went on to tell me that when DH was little he had a lot of the same issues that the boys do and after a year she took him to an allergiest to find out that he was allergic to cow's milk among many other things.  I know there are a lot of you that have gone through the allergy thing.  Did any of your LOs have the same kind of symptoms we've been dealing with at our house?

I had another nurse suggest to me that they doctor isn't able to see down the ear canal because of how wiggly the boys are and she also suggested I request an x-ray of the sinuses because her daughter had a lot of the same symptoms and it turned out every one of her sinuses were infected.  Of course it could be a million things or nothing at all.  I feel like I need to take a "next step" but I'm not sure what direction I should go.  The boys still have a nasty cough 9 days later, very runny nose, eczema flair ups, and bright red diaper rash.  C has less of the eczema issues and more of the sleep issues.  He's been up and down since midnight.

Thoughts?  Advice?

  • I definitely think you need to be proactive and make an appointment with an allergist.  Katelyn had a lot of the same symptoms as your boys.  You get results very quickly and, like you said, it will be nice to have answers and be able to move on from there.  Let me know if you want an allergist recommendation or have more allergy questions!

  • I think at this point it's worth a try.... hopefully you get answers soon!
  • I would try to find either an allergist or ENT.  Hope you are able to figure out what is going on!
  • How frustrating!  I would definitely call and allergist as well.  It can't hurt ot try and cover all of your bases.  My brother is allergic to bananas.  His only symptom is pain and swelling in his ears.  Weird, right?

I hope your boys are feeling better soon so that you can get some rest!
