3 hour GTT

I have to take the 3 hour test on Monday and I am SO anxious about it.  I get sick when I don't eat breakfast, so I am afraid I am going to throw-up, pass out, or have a panic attack.  They told me it will actually take 4 hours, because they have to wait for my first blood draw to come back from the lab before they can give me the drink (ugh).  I felt so sick and shaky during the one hour and I can't imagine drinking twice as much on an empty stomach.

If you had to take it, what was your experience?

Re: 3 hour GTT

  • That is a little off to wait for the first blood draw results. Usually when you get there they draw the blood first from fasting. Then give you the drink, wait an hour then draw again, then 2 hr mark, then 3 hr mark and your done.

  • I have no advice, but I wanted to say good luck. I hope it's the fastest four hours ever! (besides labor of course!)

  • I had mine last week.  I fasted from midnight the night before and showed up for my appt at 8 am.  They drew my blood and then gave me the glucose to drink and told me to finish it w/in 10 min.  I didn't have to wait for any results of the first blood draw.  After I finished the drink, they drew my blood 3 more times on the hour.  I was done at 11:20 am.  I got my results the next day.  Make sure you bring a granola bar or something to eat after you are done with the draws.  I was a bit dizzy.  I would also recommend bringing some water to drink while you are waiting between draws, I got thirsty.

Good luck!  It's not that bad, just really boring!

  • Granola bar = more sugar.  Take some cheese for after the test.

I found that sitting made me feel worse than standing.  Walking made me feel even better.  My office has two waiting rooms, so I opted for the more private one and did laps around the room.  Of course, you probably won't want to do that the entire time, but frequent breaks from US Weekly can help.  Also, I took a large bottle of water and sipped it throughout the hours.  When I chugged it to try to dilute the sugary taste in my mouth, it made me a little queasy having all that hit my stomach at one time.

  • I take mine on Monday as well.  When I had to do the 3 hour with DS#1 they took my blood fasting and then gave me the drink right away....I hope that ends up the case for you. It's long a boring.  I passed the 3 hr with my first son, so I am so hoping the same this time.......although my 1 hr number was alot higher!  Good luck.,   Oh I napped some the first time during the 3 hr. They had a recliner in the waiting room and set my cell phone alarm for every hour in case I fell asleep.
  • Thanks everyone!  I definitely have to wait for the 1st blood draw.  I called the lab yesterday to see if I could come do it today and they said no.  They are only open 4 hours today and the lab tech said that it may take more than that, because of waiting for the results from the first draw before I can have the drink.  It sucks! DH now has to take 1/2 day off of work to watch our son and then when I get home I have to take care of DS, so I can't even rest and nap.

  • I took it yday and I am the same way as you about skipping breakfast equaling throwing up.  I set my alarm for 11:30 and ate piece of whole wheat bread with a lot of peanut butter and I also ate some wheat crackers and cheese and a glass of soymilk.  For dinner, I ate double what I normally would (but oh the heartburn.)  This seemed to do the trick because I wasn't nearly as hungry in the morning as I normally am.

I was allowed to drink water so I drank small sips all throughout the test.  The worst parts for me were the wait before I was allowed to drink it as I was getting really hungry.  Once I drank it it seemed to fill me up a little.  Then I was super jittery until I got really tired for awhile.  It seemed to stablilize after that and I was okay until after the test.

But I felt awful from the time we ate lunch until I woke up this morning.  I was completely exhausted and so queasy.  But the actual test wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  Now I just have to wait for my results.  I only failed the one hour by 6 points, so I am hopeful I will pass it.

  • I get really sick when I don't eat as well.  I was worried about drinking the glucola on an empty stomach because I'm hypoglycemic and I knew that my blood sugar would go from very low to very high in a short amount of time.  I also pass out when I have blood drawn, so the situation was not looking good!

Somehow, I managed to make it through four blood draws after fasting without passing out.  I just repeated to myself, "I'm a mom now; I'm an adult; I can do this" over and over.  Even when I was used as a pin cushion for a guy who had never done a blood draw before, I made it!

The experience wasn't pleasant, but it was worth it for the peace of mind that comes from knowing I don't have to worry about GD with this LO.

  • i felt shaky and stuff during my 1 hr. so i was also scared to get sick for the 3 hr. but i was fine. i did feel a little sick to my stomach. but it didnt result in any throwing up.

oh and a granola bar is fine (choose a fiber one bar). the GD nutrionist told me they're fine because the fiber and protein help level out your sugar.

  • I'm going in Monday, too! I failed my 1 hour by a measly 2 points. I'm really nervous that I'm going to feel horrible the whole time. I threw up a little in my mouth after drinking the drink for the first one. It didn't taste bad or anything it just upset my stomach.

I really hope that you make it through and I'm sorry you can't rest afterward! I don't have anything to do for 3 hours after that so I plan on passing out on my couch after a huge, meaty lunch.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • I had to take my 3 hour GTT 2 weeks ago. It wasn't bad at all. I couldn't eat/drink anything after 12am the night before so I did feel a little tired after drinking it but it soon went away..I didn't get sick!!! After reading some of the stories on here I was nervous but it wasn't anything like I'd expected. My test was at 9am. She drew the blood then I had to drink a fruit punch drink. It just tasted a little sweeter than regular and plus it was cold. I drunk it in no time then I went back into the waiting room and every hour I had to go back and get blood drawn again. She told me if everything looked good then she would let me leave early but mine was 119 so unfortunately I had to stay the whole 4 hours. Time actually flew by and it was 1pm before I knew it. Smile
