Who has read "1.2.3. Magic"?

It just arrived in our mailbox yesterday, and I'm only a few pages in, but I'm hopeful. After a rough week with DD; I'm ready for a positive change!  :)

If you've read it, how did it work for your family?

  • I have read it- the philosophy is very much in line with how I personally parent. We don't have to use it much with Gisele(knock on wood-)- but when we do- it works very well.

  • We watched the video. We sat him down, explained the process, and he had one major tantrum in his room. Then it was all good. He learned quickly.

  • I read "1, 2, 3 Magic for Teachers" and it was really great. I was having a very hard time with my class of 38. (urban & low income) and this method really helped me to keep order and not scream at them all day long. once they knew that I ment business it was great! Good Luck!
  • we use the technique and it really did work like magic!  GL.

  • Oh, "Love and Logic" is another great book. you present children with choices and they choose how they want to behave. I think this will work well even with LOs because they learn that if they choose to disobey then they will have consequences, like a time out.
  • I do a combination of this and Love and Logic. It works really well for DD1! The counting really is a miracle worker for her ;)

Honestly though, I need to go back and reread it because I'm falling off the wagon, so to say and haven't been doing a good job of it. I need to be more consistent because it definitely does work.

  • Absolutely LOVE this book and have been using it for over 2 years now!

I go back and re-read it from time to time, every year Emily turns another year older to ensure I'm using the proper techniques for her growing, developing brain.  It helped us in so many ways: understanding what children at each age THINK and WHY they act the ways they do, learning how to have reasonable expectations of Emily (at each age), how to discipline in ways that helps Emily grow, and how to keep our "parental temper tantrums" to a minimal.

No one gives you a parenting manual when you leave the hospital and DH & I both often times found ourselves just doing whatever we remembered our parents doing with us growing up, although not truly believing in it, but feeling like we weren't sure WHAT to do exactly... if this makes any sense.

We love the step by step approach and we feel it works if you commit to following it!  :)

  • It's really worked wonders for DD1, who is a v.v.v.willful and 'spirited' kid, always has been.  It doesn't work all the time, but it does work a good bit of the time, which is worth it to me!

A warning, though, you have to apply it correctly (i.e. consistently, follow through, etc.)  DH does not and it doesn't work for him.  GL, hope you see some good results. :)

  • I read it and wasn't overly impressed.  The only thing that I took away from the book that even semi-worked with Ben was the counting.  I felt like the author kept saying the same thing over and over again and that it was 4-5 chapters too long.
