Volunteering

For those of you who do volunteer work, what do you do?  And what do you do with your child/children while you volunteer?

I do little things with my church here and there, but I'd like to do something on a more regular basis, between 4-10 hours per month.  My only problem is finding childcare for DD while I'm away.  My parents watch her 1-2 evenings a week already and we can't afford to pay for a sitter.  I know my mom would if I asked, I just know she has a lot going on already too.  So I guess I'm wondering if anyone volunteers somewhere where the kids can help out, or where there is childcare for the kids while they volunteer?  Or if they trade with other moms?  Or any other ideas.

And I really would rather not volunteer somewhere where I will be taking care of children.  Since I am doing that all day, I'd like to have some interaction with adults too, KWIM?  TIA!

Re: Volunteering

  • I am a part of my high school alumni association board, so I volunteer with them as well as my sorority alumni association from college.  For the most part it is just meetings once a month, and then various activities through out the year.

  • It's a bit scary, but House of Bread in downtown Dayton always needs volunteers in the mornings. They provide brunch/lunch for the poor downtown, and you are only there for a couple of hours. Like I said, it's in a bit of a scary area, but the need is DEFINITELY there and you really know you're doing some good. If you aren't interested in actually serving food there, you can just be one of the people who drives to the various places (Panera, Meijer, DLM, etc.) to pick up the bread/food to drive it over there.

  • I volunteer at the New Hope Center as a caregiver to women facing unplanned pregnancies. We offer support and work through lesson plans for the moms so they can learn how to take care of themselves and their babies if they are planning to parent. I only go one night a week for two hours and I really enjoy it. Our three centers are in NKY (not sure where you are) but I know there are similar places in Ohio.

  • Erin, this sounds interesting.  Have you ever volunteered there?  Do you know if they need a weekly commitment or is it a come whenever you can type of thing?

Manda - I am going to see if there is anything like this in Dayton.  This sounds like something I would definitely enjoy.  I love talking about kids and parenting (probably why I'm on the bump, haha).

Thank you both for the suggestions, I'm off to google!

  • I do my volunteering through work so I'm not a ton of help. We do different things throughout the year and right now my focus is on the March of Dimes.
