1st Trimester

Anyone else hypothyroid?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in September.  Since then, I started medication and my TSH levels returned to normal.  My endocrinologist gave me a prescription for blood work and told me to use it as soon as i learned I was pregnant. I got my blood work done Tuesday (5 weeks, 3 days) and will get the results tomorrow.  I'm a little stressed though, because I've already gained about 5 pounds without increasing my caloric intake very much at all. This makes me think I'm not getting enough thyroid hormone (through medication and my own production) for both me and the baby, which can be problematic for development. Anyone else out there hypothyroid, and if so, are you gaining weight faster than normal?
I just posted the same post on the October 2011 boards, but I thought maybe I should broaden the audience.  Thanks!

Re: Anyone else hypothyroid?

  • It's so funny you asked-I just got my BFP yesterday at 4w1d.  I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and was wondering when I should get my TSH level checked.  I don't have an Endo appt until the end of March, so I'm calling tomorrow about it.

I *definitely* am more bloated, but I don't think I've gained true weight.  I'd see what your Endo says about it.

  • I am also hypothyroid, and my endo also said to get bloodwork as soon as possible after BFP (i am going tomorrow.) She said your synthroid needs can increase fairly quickly. She also gave me the go-ahead to take an extra 1/2 pill a day if i wanted before blood test results came back (i'm on 50mcg,) so i have been doing that this weekend.
It's also possible some of your 5 pounds is bloat. I wouldn't worry too much about your numbers...you are still fairly early on, and from what i know, i think finding out tomorrow will be fine, you can immediately change your dose and get the levels you need if you need to increase.

  • I just found out that I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis on Wednesday. Im a little worried because althought my TSH levels aren't really high {3.81} - I am almost out of my first trimester. I understand the first tri is the most important time since the baby is dependant on your thyroid hormone until it produces its own. Its also my understand  that if untreated in the first tri - the baby has a higher chance of developing motor skill delays.

They put me on synthroid 50mcg - and Im actually starting to feel a little better.

  • I'm hypothyroid as well, but not too badly. My "high" TSH levels were 9.7, and I got back down to just over 2 in 8 weeks with a low dose of 50 mcg levothyroxine. I asked my OB about it, and she said not to worry about it because mine isn't serious and they'll do a blood work-up at my 8wk visit.

I imagine if my condition weren't so mild, the protocol would be different.

I plan to call my PCP this week just to double-check, though.

I did gain 2 lbs this week, but I lost it all in the hour I spent in the bathroom last night. lol The joys of early pregnancy.

  • I'm hypothryoid, on 100mcg of Levo.  Will just need to do frequent blood tests as I did last pregnancy and adjust meds as needed.  I went through approx six changes last pregnancy.  It was a hard pregnancy both times, but I also have other health problems.

    Good luck to you.

  • My OB testing me all the time and they called me when I needed a Rx change. With DDmy dose kepg going higher and higher and then after having her it fell through the floor.

You should just have a "standing order" so you can go in when you feel symptoms and have it checked. They can phone a new Rx in : )

  • I was Dx in August 2010 when we began TTC, I do not have Hasimotos. My highest TSH was 6.7. I was started on 50mcg by my PCP. Then in January I went to the endocrinologist and he increased me to 125mcg.

Since then I havnt lost or gain any weight until this past week or so, I lost 2-3lbs instead of gaining. I am seeing the specialist today for my regularly scheduled appt after bood work friday. I will tell him today that I am pregnant and we will go from there. He did tell me before that my TSH needs to stay under 2.5 while I am pregnant and that I will need to see a "high risk" OBGYN.

In any event, I dont think your 5lbs are anything to worry about just yet, it could be water weight and bloating, but ill wil try to remember to update here after my appt today.
