Re: thoughts on eloise?

  • I'm not a fan.  It seems like one of those "old lady" names that hasn't made the transition to be more accepted as a modern name.

I would pronounce it el o weez.

If you are planning on using the nn's you listed, then just name the child one of those names in the first place.

  • I love this name!!!  I wanted Eloise if we were having a girl, but DH vetoed it.  Luckily, he came up with Elle Louise Last Name.  Since Louise is a family name.  We are not having a girl though.

Great choice!  Such a pretty name for a little one and a woman when she grows up!

  • Its not my style. I would pronounce it the first way.

  • I LOVE Eloise! I think it is elegant and lovely.

I would say it as EL-oh-eez.

I could see Elle as a nickname for Eloise.

  • I obviously love the name Eloise. :)  We call my DD "Ellie" because it just seemed to fit. I had a hard time inititally with the name (it was my grandmother's name) and thought of an old lady when I heard it...but then it kind of grew on me and it was the only name I kept coming back to.  Then I heard about the "Eloise" books and fell more in love with it (I can picture my DD being as precocious as the character in the book).  I still hadn't made up my mind when I went in to have my c-section, but the minute I laid eyes on her I just knew she was an Eloise/Ellie.  It is an older name, but there are so mny NN possibilities....and you would be surprised at how quickly in populartity it is becoming!  I also think it's a sweet name....

  • Very nice name, it is a beautiful classic and gives the image of a sweet little girl picking flowers.

  • I say El-o-eez. I love it! It seems to be getting quite popular, but I still think it's lovely.
  • I really don't care for Eloise, to be honest.  Elise is similar and I like it better.

  • I don't like it.  The "weez" sound in a name is just not pretty or nice sounding, IMO.

  • off topic- but you were a stunning bride. I adore your dress!
  • I love that your DD name is Eloise and that it is a family name!  We have not family tie to it, I just thought it was a pretty name, classic and I liked it more than Eleanor..which I also think is pretty.

I know it is a family name for you so I imagine your family was on board with it, but did other people receive it well?  Do you have issues with how people pronouce it?

do you say it ell o weez?  that is the way that I would think it would be said but I have heard a few variations.

    yay or nay? Yay!

what type of girl do you picture to be an eloise? I picture a gorgeous, sweet, bright little girl who is utterly amazing in every way :)

would you say it..  EL O weez?  or more like louis.   el o ouis? We say El-oh-eeze

Nicknames- Ella, Elle, Ellie, lola No nicknames here. In fact, some acquaintances try to shorten it, and I correct them. Eloise is an uncommon name; Ella, Ellie, etc. will be a dime a dozen in her generation. We're trying to avoid a nickname.

As far as how other people recieve it, most people will say that it's a beautiful name but immediately follow up with "do you call her Ellie?" Quite a few people told us that they knew an Eloise who was an extremely sweet old lady.

We love it, though. I'd recommend it :)

  • DD1 is Amelia Eloise.  Eloise was my grandma's name.  I always knew I wanted my daughter to have the middle name Eloise.  My grandma died when I was 10, and I just love every memory I have of her.  She was the most elegant woman I've ever known.  And there was nothing that woman couldn't do...

Spunky; personable; possibly popular in school- but not really a cheerleader... more like Student Council.

I like to think I'm not pronouncing a W sound, but when I say it over and over, I realize that I am saying EL-o-wees.

No, no, no, and (I'm assuming that's Lola, not iola, right? If so, then) yes.

Well, my parents were thrilled, especially my dad as it was his mom's name.  My younger sister was totally for it as she and my dad were the ones whoe initially brought it up.  My twin sister HATED it and tried everything she could (in good fun) to make me change my mind.  SHe swore she was going to teach her boys to call her "Weezy" from the Jefferson's- I just told her that I at least I was "moving on up" in the world. LOL!  The funny thing is that everyone calls DD "Ellie" EXCEPT for my twin sister's boys and they call her Eloise- it sounds so sweet coming from them!  I got a great reception from my friends and coworkers...but that was too my face.  Who knows if they really liked it.  The people who's opinions mattered to me were honest and I got about a 50/50 reaction.

As for pronouncing it- most people here say ELLA-weese....soft 's', if that makes sense. I am more surprised by the fact that most people can't spell it- they want to spell it Elouise....odd.

Anyways- I adore the name and am so thankful I didn't let the nay-sayers get to me.  You really need to choose a name that you think fits your DD, and one that you think will grow with her.  I couldn't be happier with it.  FWIW- her full name is Eloise Ann Tomiko (last name is her japanese name- DH is japanese).  I LOVE the way it looks when written down, and I LOVED hearing it said over and over during her baptism- that's when it really hit me that it was such a perfect name!!!

I do hope you choose it.... :)
