Pneumonia/Bronchitis & Pregnancy

Today is the first time I've felt even remotely human since Wednesday.  It's been quite the "exciting" week for me.  My OB prescribed me a Zpak on Wed. when I went for my three hour glucose test because I was coming down with something -- earache, scratchy throat, runny nose, cough... nothing fun.  Thank god I asked her to give me something because at hour four when she drew my blood for the final time, I was dead to the world.  My Mom took me to her house afterwards to take care of me until my husband could pick me up.Thursday morning I didn't feel so hot but I couldn't call out from work because I already had Monday off for President's Day and Wednesday for my doctor.  I sucked it up and decided to wander the mall with J and my Mom looking at baby stuff and an outfit for my shower.  By 4PM when we were leaving the mall, I could no longer breathe well and just wanted to go home.Later that night I ended up in the ER for breathing problems (everyone in my family has asthma except for me). The Zpak that was prescribed for me was not doing anything for me. I was having a lot of trouble breathing for about four hours and after doing everything I could think of (hot shower, humidifier, tea, vapor rub, etc.) without any change, I called my doctor. I ended up in the ER because I couldn't breathe sitting up -- forget about laying down. I was coughing horribly and vomiting. I was in the ER from about 10PM-2AM. I was given breathing treatments (albuterol). I was released around 1:30. I now have an asthma inhaler and very strong cough meds that were OK'ed by my OB.  I went for a checkup with my general practicioner on Friday and he hadn't ruled out pneumonia.  He added amoxicillan to my already huge list of drugs to take and said if I hadn't improved over the weekend that I would be on prednisone.Last night was the first time since Wednesday that I had been able to sleep for more than an hour at a time.  I slept in chunks of 4-5 hours which was great because I take my medicine every four hours.  I'm home taking it easy for another day or two before I head back to work.  I hope that I do not see that hospital until I give birth!!!!

  • I read the read of your post and I'm sorry they won't give you any cough meds or something stronger!!   It is the scariest feeling in the world.  My entire family has asthma but I was never diagnosed with it... now i know their pain.  Breathing is difficult as it is with a baby squashing your lungs.  If you get a Zpak, I hope it helps a bit!!!
