Would you give a lollipop to a 9 month old?

Yes? No? Special snowflake?

I tend to think that sugar on a stick should be for no less than 18 months and up at the earliest, but I am sure that DD nabbed one of DS at one point or another.

But I mean more like deliberately handing them a lollipop.

  • No, but more out of concern for choking. But I am notoriously paranoid about choking fears.

  • I think Joey was a year when he had his first lollipop -- in Disney.  A Mickey shaped one.  9 months?  Eh, maybe.  I don't know.
  • Ditto the choking concern, but I wouldn't give DS2 any sweets now regardless.

  • I think I gave DS one at his first hair cut when he was 10 mos - or  maybe I just gave him an animal cracker then and a lolli at the 12 mo cut.   I forget.. .seems like forever ago.

  • No way. Choking, too much sustained sugar against teeth, and a habit I don't want to start.
  • Not on purpose. . . but for reasons of choking, not sugar.

I know DS has eaten smarties off the floor at DD's preschool.  And dead moths off the windowsill.  And dogfood.  And. . .

LOL. DS2 has only eaten paper that I'm aware of so far. Oh, wait, I did fish a bit of crayon out of his mouth yesterday.

  • I let my older girls give Michelle a couple of licks once in awhile at that age but I wouldnt give her her own lollipop for choking reasons.

If it's too quiet, I know Leif is somewhere in the house eating paper.  He's like a puppy.

  • Nate LOVES paper. He's got a knack for finding any little scrap left on the floor.

  • LMAO at the dead moths. That wouldn't bother me, but a lollipop would. Funny stuff.

  • Nope. Too much of a choking hazard. Gosh, I can't even get ds3 to eat solids without excessive gagging and spitting up, let alone a lollipop!
  • No.  DS1 hasn't had one yet at 14 months but my reasons are choking and not sugar--he had a M&M cookies sans M&Ms (I ate those) yesterday.  I didn't give him the M&Ms for choking reasons too.  He only has 1 tooth.

me too. DS2 is so orally fixated and eats a steady diet of play-doh, marker tips, crayons and petrified food bits. This doesn't phase me but lollipops would.

Wow, 1 tooth at 14 months!

  • all of mine have been late teethers.  the pedi dentist (though) swears that DD MUST have been an early teether.  She got her 6 year molars at 4.75 and lost her first tooth at 5.5.  Both which are considered early

  • I think each of my kids have had them earlier than the first.  DD#1 probably didn't have one until after she turned 2.  DD#2 was a little younger.  DS has already had a few.

This. Especially the choking hazard and not wanting to start a habit.

  • Nope, because I don't think it is necessary to give them candy- they don't even know what it is yet, they will be begging for it soon enough.

Plus I am sure DS#2 would put it in his hair...

  • Yes.  DS would raise hell when DD got a dum dum and he didn't.  I watched him closely and took it away when it got small.  It was just not worth the drama.  DD was over two I think.  DS always want to do the same thing DD is doing.
  • uhh no. ?BUT DH's family is a bunch of nutbars, his grandma tries to sneak alcohol & chocolate to the babies ALL THE TIME. ?If I took all the crap she tried to give my kids.. well, I'll just say I'd let her give a lollipop if I had the choice. ?Better than gin, wine, pixie stix, chocolate cake, pop rocks, steak.... ?all before a year old.
  • No. I would not. I don't think DD1 had candy until after 2 years. That might not be realistic for DD2 with an older sister, but I will do my best to limit it.

This for my boys too.  DS#2 started having lollipops around a year probably because anytime his brother had one, he would raise hell if he didn't get one.  No big deal in my opinion.  My DS#3 eats everything that we eat at this point and he just turned 9 months a few days ago.  We try to make fruit, veggies, and protein the majority of his intake (in addition to breastmilk) but I am not bothered by the occasional spoonful of chocolate pudding or animal cookie.
