LO is scratching her bum, switch to cloth?

XP:  My DH has eczema, we've been worried our LO will get it. She scratches her forearms and bum/hip area pretty badly. Mostly she scratches at her bum during diaper changes. Poor thing has scabs.

Anyone use only cloth diapers at night? She is in daycare and I just don't think we can handle cleaning poopy diapers after they sit in a sack for 8 hours. (DC isn't allowed to dump out poo.) Maybe this will help?

Or anyone have issues with fleece PJs and itchy skin? My DH's eczema is a petroleum/synthetic fabric allergy, so maybe the PJs make her itchy?

(We run a humidifier in her room and lotion her up with Vanicream every night. We don't bath her overly often and don't make the water too hot.)

  • We use cloth full time and DD scratches her bum/thighes all the time...I don't think it has anything to do with the diapers.

  • Thanks. I was really hoping it would be a simple solution. I just hate that she is scratching and causing scabs. I might try to put her in cotton PJs for 3-4 days to see if that does anything.

Ditto. I've been using some disposable diapers lately. Ds has always scratched. I think it's just a baby thing - I've seen others do it too. I think you're doing good with the Vanicream and humidifier.

  • We were using cloth at night time only when Bryce was in DC. It was easy enough for just night time and the weekends. We just started using the Aveeno Baby cream and wash for Eczema and have noticed an improvement in his skin in about a week. He was never really itchy or bothered by it though.

  • I quit putting DS in fleece pajamas because I felt like they were causing him skin issues. I would definitely try switching to cotton and see if that helps.

  • If she's scratching her arms and stuff, CDs might help but you should try switching soap, detergent, fabric softener, lotion, avoid wearing perfume (on the rare occasions I wear perfume C will sometimes break out on his face where he lays his head on my chest), give her lukewarm baths, don't bathe every night, etc.  Definitely try and keep to natural fibers against her skin.

If she has flaky skin or rash, try hydrocortisone.  I'm sure you know all this if your DH has eczema.  I had really bad eczema growing up (didn't really get it under control until I was halfway through high school) and I have crazy sensitive skin.  We CD because I knew C would inherit my sensitive skin (and he did).  We use CA Baby baby wash and lotion for him, All F&C detergent, no softener, etc.

Eczema can also be a reaction to food.  Do you notice she itches more after she has dairy?  Good luck, I hope you find some relief!
