How many times do you pick up & put down at night?

For naps & night time we have to pick up & put her down a few times before she stays asleep. I'm not really complaining b/c she sleeps great but it does get annoying b/c you never know when it will be the last time for the night.

Is this normal? Sometimes she will sleep for 10 min before whining again but most of the time it's 2-3 min.

Re: How many times do you pick up & put down at night?

  • Usually at night if she starts fussing its because her paci fell out.?

I normally don't have to pick her up until its feeding time.

  • When he is just fighting his sleep and his diaper is clean and he is full, I try to soothe him by rubbing his back or belly and whispering "sshh" in his ear or putting the mobile on as I rub him.  Usually he falls back asleep and I don't need to actually pick him up. We always have to do this once or twice after putting him down at night and each feeding at night, then he is good for a few hours.

  • DS does the same thing.  It is frustrating. I think he startles himself.

  • A lot.

Once he starts to fuss I wait a little bit to see if he's really upset... then when he doesn't stop I go pick him up and sooth him. ?I just tried to lay him down 20 minutes ago and he woke back up and then I took him back out b/c he started to cry and I just laid him back down and I'm pretty sure he'll be good for another 2-3 hours (hopefully!)
  • When we swaddled, about 50% of the time DS would go down the first time.  The other half.... he was up every 20 minutes, 2 or 3 times in a row, and then down.  I never figured out the difference between those times.

Now that we don't swaddle, I've noticed that I have to rock him for a LONG time, to get him deeply asleep, and then he goes down for longer.  Good luck!

  • She's been doing better but Friday I picked her up 7 times in one hour. I try patting her but it only works like once a week! I may ask her pedi. I don't know if she isn't comfortable or what's wrong.
  • Last week= maybe once, if that. This week=possibly up to 3 or 4 times, then he is up every half hour for a couple of hours before he goes out for maybe three hours. Then he is up at least every two hours, and needs to be picked back up at least once each time.  Yes the 4 month wakeful period is here. Every night is an adventure!

Yes, I would say that is normal. I do try to soothe him while still in the crib though, by turning him on his back and singing and patting him.

  • Too many. DS used to sleep a 6 hr strech uninterrupted from 8-2 and now he's up every 1-2 hours to be held or fed. :( Occasionally putting the paci back in will work, but then he'll just wake up again 5 minutes later

  • We have to do that at least a couple times before she falls asleep from 10pm - 7am.  It does get annoying, but we can't really complain since she started STTN at 3 weeks old.  And we know that we are lucky.  We try not to pick her up to rock her unless she starts crying, but she almost always ended up crying.
