Building a Stash?

Hi everyone! My lo is just over 3 weeks and I have been ebf since day 1. Things are going well as he is gaining weight appropriately. I will be going back to work the first week of May and was thinking I probably need to think about starting to pump to store. However when I pump I only get 3 oz at most. I guess I don't really know when I should pump and how often since I've been so focused on just feeding lo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • In the am is when you have the most supply.  Pump about 30 mins after your first morning feeding.   If you want to build up more pump  other times of the day too.  do you have a good pump? is it new or are you borrowing from someone else?   the more you pump the more you will start getting because you are tricking your body to think that your LO is eating and needing more milk.

  • I had the same problem.  I felt like I couldn't keep up, let alone pump "extra" to store.  I am a teacher, so I had to store some when going back to school and learn how to pump at certain times.  I pumped after the baby went to bed for the night (the longest stretch).  He would go down about 7pm and I pumped about 9pm.  Then, in the morning, when he woke (4am) I would nurse on one side only and pump the other side.  During the day, I would nurse on one side and pump the other.  Sometimes this would have to happen while he was napping.  I felt like a milk machine, but it worked out.  I am still pumping before bed and in the morning after his first feed.  My lactation consultant also recommended pumping 5-7 minutes after you think you are "done." this will trick your body into thinking it needs to make more.  Good luck!
