Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When to worry about not sleeping enough...

Until this week, DS has been such an awesome sleeper from day one.  Predictable naps (1 45 min and 1 2 hr one a day), and about 11 hrs straight at night.

This week he is a totally different child.

Wednesday night, slept only 7 hours with no naps during the day.

Thursday, no naps and was up from 2-4am overnight and up for the day at 7am Friday.

Friday.. no naps, wouldn't go down until almost 10pm last night, up for the day before 7 am today.

Today... no nap yet.  Like, not even a cat nap.

He has been a holy terror.  I think he might be cutting a tooth, but he never acted like this for his first two in December. He cries constantly and NOTHING makes him happy.  I am at a loss at what to do.  At what point should I call the pedi?

He has his 9mo check up Wednesday so I will discuss it with the dr. then.. but this kid has NEVER been sick, never had a fever, has just been the happiest baby.

  • Have you tried Tylenol for the teeth?  I am always unsure to do Tylenol because I don't want to medicate if it really isn't teeth but earlier this week we were having a super rough night with NOTHING working until I gave some of that.

The last time we had a really hard section of sleep with no naps and not long enough at night it turned out to be an ear infection.   It doesn't hurt to call the pedi's office and see what they say.  Good Luck!

  • Have you tried teething relievers? I'd probably offer some ibuprofen or tyleno, or Gripe Water. One of those should help with teething. I don't do Orajel but you could try that if you're comfortable with it.

It sounds like either a phase or teething. I'd try to hold out until Wednesday.

  • Sounds like teething or maybe even an ear infection to me. Does he tug at his ears at all? If T got that little sleep he'd definitely be a monster baby & I'd be looking for a reason for the sudden wakefulness. Maybe you can call the pedis office & see what they think or maybe get you in sooner? Gl! Poor little guy :(
  • There is a wakefulness associated with 9 months, it could be related to that. He could be straight up miserable because he's exhausted. I'd probably do whatever I could to get him to sleep- even if that means cuddling with him- before I medicated.
