Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question from 3rd Tri (Recommend your book(s))

Can you recommend your parenting/baby sleep book(s)? I remember nannying and utilizing methods from "The Contented Little Baby" (loved that book) and I like that the beginning of the book gives advice about how to prepare for LO before he/she arrives (what needs to be done, clean, prepared, etc.).

I've heard bad things about the Baby Wise Book, but I've also heard great things from moms who've used it.

Any other recommendations or thoughts? How do you choose a method before LO arrives? This is complicated.

Thanks!

  • "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child" and "Secrets of the Baby Whisperer" are my two favorites so far.

  • "What To Expect The First Year"

It allows me to take in as much information as possible and then make our own decision on how we want to do things.

It's like a dictionary for babies! Haha!

  • Baby 411 is a must.  Several friends recommended it, and I love it.  I find myself using it as a reference often.

  • The Happiest Baby on the Block is helpful for soothing techniques when they are little.

I didn't like babywise or baby whisperer; they didn't work for my LO and in my opinion try to push cry it out methods on babies who are far too young.  while I think it is possible for some babies to learn to sleep through the night at a young age, I do not think it is the norm.

In retrospect, my son really wasn't ready to respond to sleep training techniques until he was about six months old.  In the meantime I shed alot of tears and did alot of banging my head against a wall wondering why it wasn't working when I was being consistent.  I wish I had just accepted earlier on that it takes babies a long time to learn to sleep well.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth was a little more practical and less harsh in its approach, but ultimately didn't help us much to achieve results.

In the end the book that helped me the most was the Ferber book, Solving your child's sleep problems.  I had resisted it for so long because I had heard it was so harsh, but in my opinion it's really not.
