Is it like a little pinhole just in front of the top of the ear? If so, that's a preauricular pit. On its own, it means nothing. But point it out to the pediatrician. And no,they don't just appear, they are there from birth.
Like I said, normally nothing to worry about. Just point it out to your pedi at the next visit. Until then, just keep an eye out for it getting red or swollen (signs of infection). But's that's not likely at all.?
Wow! DS has one of those too and I've never even thought about it. I just thought it was kind of cute:) He passed his hearing test, but I will mention it to the Pedi at the next appt.

DS has one above his right ear. The pedi said that they are hereditary and that someone in your family most likely has it too. They are harmless, but as a pp said, watch for signs of infection. My pedi said that it is very very rare that they do get infected.
I have one myself. Eventually mine did get infected around age 10. It turned out to be a cyst that had to be surgically removed twice. Haven't had problems since. My parents always said it was where I was picked off the patch
Yup it's a preauricularpit. DD has one. It's hereditary if someone in your family have it. In most cases, it's harmless. It can get infected and stinky pus will come out. That usually happens when the kid is a little older. So it's important to keep it clean. If it gets infected frequently, the pit can be surgically removed. The surgeon has to be familiar with pit removal because it will come back if it's not completely removed. There can be association with other ear anomalies or renal anomalies. So you should definitely point it out to the pedi. I am surprised that your pedi didn't notice it.
Our pedi noticed it when he came to see DD at the hospital. They did an u/s on DD's kidneys at the hospital, and the right kidney was slightly bigger. We just took her in for VCUG as a follow-up to make sure she doesn't have renal problems.
