Hoarse Cry???

My DD will be 2 months tomorrow and yesterday she woke up with a different cry. She sounds very hoarse. Even her whine sounds hoarse. She does not have a fever, but she is congested. She also has reflux. The only thing I have found online is that it could be from the reflux. Do any of you ladies have experience with a hoarse cry? Could it be just that she is getting older and changing? Is it part of her reflux? She has an appointment on Monday so I will ask the pedi then, but without a fever I don't see a reason to call over the weekend.

TIA

Re: Hoarse Cry???

  • DS had this at 8 weeks but he had a cold at the time. It is so sad to listen to! If she doesn't have a cough I agree that you could wait til monday. hope she feels better soon! 1ht

  • Lurker here...

My dd had a hoarse cry when she was 5 weeks (she's 7 now), and it seemed to come out of nowhere.  She didn't have any congestion, runny nose, or fever.  The only thing that I noticed was that she was spitting up a little more than usual and her breath had a sour smell...both of which are signs of reflux.

Pedi said to try reflux precautions (especially decreasing volume of feeds, but feeding more often and keeping her up 20-30 mins after a feed).  She also gave me a referral to ENT to rule out laryngomalacia (structures around larynx not being fully formed and flopping into the airway, causing the stridor or hoarseness).

ENT said no probs w/ larynx, and to continue w/ the reflux precautions.  She's doing very well now just w/ those, and I was glad I didn't have to put her on any meds unnecessarily.  Try reflux precautions and see if those help.  HTH
