Hello All,
I don't know if some of you remember, but I introduced myself about a month ago. My daughter, Lilith, was born at 26 weeks and 2 days and is currently staying at Miami Valley Hospital.
Well, it looks like we are being transferred to the NICU at Cincinnati Children's. Lilith is having issues with her airway being tight, and after her 6th failed extubation yesterday, the doctors at Miami Valley are finally transferring us so Lily can be evaluated by a Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat specialist.
My husband and I are going to tour Children's NICU later today, but I am wondering if any of you have had experience with Children's NICU, or if your child has ever been evaluated by an ENT at Chldren's? Any information would be helpful...
... I know Cincinnati Children's is a great children's hospital, and is nationally recognized, but I can't help but be nervous about Lilith's transfer. I'm relieved that we are finally doing more than letting her "rest and grow," but I am so sad to be leaving the hospital and nurses we have grown to love.
Re: Cincinnati Children's NICU?
Hi, sorry you have to deal with some extra issue with your sweet little girl. I work at Children's, and while I am not part of the clinical staff I just wanted to say that you will be in great hands. Our ENT department is highly skilled. There are tons of great docs working there. Dr. Cotton has been nationally recognized many times for his work with airway issues. Best of luck!! If you ever need some downtime to eat lunch and just chat feel free to email me and I would happy to meet up, my work schedule is very flexible and I can eat lunch whenever.

Hello:
My son Max spent the first 6 months of his life in the E and F Pods at CCHMC's RCNIC. The nurses that we had were absolutely fantastic and all of them are still there. We can't speak highly enough but them. By the end of our stay, we were all in tears because we had to say goodbye. They were our family for the 6 months that we were there.
Max was diagnosed with subglottic stenous at 6 weeks of age. That is a fancy term for a narrowing of the airway. They discovered it when they went to intubate him for one of his surgeries and they said that it was caused by him being intubated right after birth. I am not a doctor, but if I had to guess from what you described above, it sounds like this is whats happening to Lily. If this is the case, they will give you three options: Place a trach, do nothing or so a cricoid split. We chose to do the cricoid split. The procedure sounds terrible, but Max hasn't had any issues since the surgery. The only downfall was that we couldn't hold him for 2 weeks because of the recovery from the surgery. He was intubated and sedated the whole time, but when he was finally able to move and be held it was great for all of us. I should also note that this diagnosis was not the reason he spent 6 months there (he was born with kidney disease).
If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to email me.

Again, you will be in the abolsute best care possible by sending her to CCHMC. Of course you will have the adjustment period when you first get there, but you won't regret your decision. They are wonderful at including you in the care of your child and they include you when decisions have to be made in regards to whats next for your child.
I wish you nothing but the best of luck with your sweet little girl. I will say a prayer that your transition goes smoothly for both you and your husband and of course for Lily.

We were out of state when our preemie was born but we have had great success with our docs and nurses at children's for her GI/dieticians and her eye docs. We have always felt 100% confident and comfortable with our care.
The NICU is a rollar coaster of emotion for sure but hopefully you guys can get the best care and move on from this stage soon. These babies are so strong and so resilient. Audrey is 2 now and that is all a distant nightmare. Praying you get to the feeder/grower stage soon. Hugs.
We spent 3 days in Children's RCNIC when DS was 1 week old due to severe newborn dehydration. We were all very well cared for, and ditto what mommy2max said- the nurses there are FABULOUS. Seriously, they were nothing but wonderful.
GL in your stay- I really think you'll be in great hands.
I work in the float pool at CCHMC, so I do not work in the NICU each day I work, but I do work there frequently, and they have great staff and take great care of the babies. She will be taken care of very well and we have a great ENT dept.
