Ocular Migraines

Well, I've been diagnosed with Ocular Migraines. I've had enough.

I wasn't sure the eye Dr was going to know what I was talking about, but am so glad he did! i get blind spots/flashes that last about 30 minutes. And after that I get a migraine in my eye. This has been happening since November, about once a month. Well I've had 3 so far for February. Nothing I can do about it. He thinks it may be related to the pregnancy. I didn't have them with DD. All I can do is eliminate caffeine, chocolate, etc. The usual migraine factors.

Just thought I'd share.

  • My sister had these exact migraines in just one of her pregnancies. Unfortunately they became more frequent as the pregnancy progressed, but then stopped completely after the baby was born!!
  • I get them more often during pregnancy (meaning maybe 2 or 3 times during the pregnancy, instead of once every 2 or so years when I am not pregnant).  Luckily, I do not get a migraine afterwards, but the flashing in my eyes for 30 or so minutes is horrible.

  • Both my sister and I would get ocular migraines when we were teenagers in high school.  Luckily as we got older that became less frequest.  I now only get about 1 or so a year.  What I've noticed is that if the visual disturbance doesn't last long the migraine is more severe.  Vice versa if the dark spots last longer my migraine isn't as bad afterwards.  Very strange.

  • I have only gotten one migraine since BFP, but used to get them a lot before.  I really, really missed Excedrin migraine in that instance!  The only pg-safe thing I can suggest when it comes on is to drink a bunch of water, then lay down in a dark room with ice on the base of your skull and a heat pack on your neck/shoulders for 10-20 minutes.  Sometimes the temperature gradient can affect blood flow and ease the symptoms, at least a little.

  • i get them too. Im pretty sure mine are stressed induced and also induced when i sleep wrong. It feels like an arrow is goign through my eye to the back/bottom of my head. The only thing that helps is turning off the lights. sleep and excedrin migraine (which sucks since we cant take it right now). sometimes when it has lasted a couple days i go to the chiropractor and he cracks my neck and that helps too. good luck i know they suck!!
