I'm a new momma considering hiring a nanny to watch our DD when my maternity leave ends.
How much do you pay your nanny? I realize this varies greatly by location.
What kind of household work does your nanny do?
Anything I should make sure to include in the contract if we go through with it?
Any good advice or reference websites are much appreciated!
Re: Nanny advice needed! Pay, household tasks, etc...
We will be paying our nanny $10/hour-kinda low for two kids-but we live in low COL area. Her housekeeping duties will include dishes, vacuming and cleaning up kids toys, clothes etc... Probably willing to pay up to $12 an hour if we find someone we really like and they request more $.
Make sure to include what your time off/benifits (if any). How much notice you require if she wants to take vacation. This is our first time hiring a full-time nanny. When DS was little we hired a part-time nanny-then when he was 18 mos he went to daycare. We have since moved now want a full-time nanny with the two kids-at least until DD is 1. Not too sure myself about the specifics on full time contracts.
we pay $11.50 an hour. Also in a low COL area. The price per hour also depends on who you hire and what amount of experience you want in your nanny.
in our contract, we only specified that she be responsible for cleaning in regards to anything with the kids. Their laundry, sheets, toys cleaned, food prep and then also said light housekeeping (which really just means cleaning up after yourself - wiping down counters type of thing). However, ours does so much more. She will actually do our laundry if it's in the laundry room, she vacuums, cleans the bathrooms, empties dishwasher)
If you google for Nanny contracts, you'll find a bunch of standard ones. We pieced together the parts that we wanted to use and made our own that way. Some things that I think are important to point out is time off, sick days, what happens on a snow day etc. We also spelled out policies on visitors, phone time, personal use of car while on duty (ex. what we pay for mileage reimbursement). We even have things like, if she plans to take the kids anywhere, she has to get prior approval from us. It all sounds really picky, but until you really know someone, you want to make sure you are covered. There are a lot more things in ours as well.
we used care.com to find ours.
We found our nanny on care.com
We share her with another family, and our share is 12/hour(HCOL).
The nanny takes care of all of DD's chores: laundry, cleaning/picking up toys, food prep and clean up. She will also load our dishwasher, clean up our kitchen, or vacuum, but that's only if she has time....it's not on her list of things to do, but I definitely appreciate the help.
We just hired a nanny who will start in 3 weeks. She is responsible for everything baby: feeding, cleaning bottles/pacis, laundry, picking up toys and keeping his room neat. When he's older, she'll take him on play dates, to the park, etc. She'll be earning $13.50 an hour, get 3 sick days, 10 vacation days and paid holidays.
For vacation days, I asked that she take 5 days consecutively with the remaining 5 days to be taken at our discretion. We did this so that she doesn't take off a bunch of single days here and there...too hard for us to plan around our work schedules.
