Just wondering if anyone can give feedback or comment on any of the midwives in RI and also the hospital birthing centers. I am looking for a midwife/birthing center that will allow me to have the kind of birth my husband and I want, as natural as possible, no pressure for intervention a place that feels homey not hospitally. We are also considering homebirth, well I'm more interested than he is but we are 'discussing' it anyway. I'd love to know what experiences any of you out there have had and who you would and would not recommend. thanks
Re: widwives
Hello! For DS2 I went with Mary Mumford-Hailey at Memorial Hopsital and was extremely satsified with my care and experience. I had an unmedicated birth and felt supported by both Mary and the staff of Memorial at all times. Mary also attends homebirths.
A good resource for all things birth and parenting is the Rhode Island Birth Network, https://www.ribirth.net/. There is provider directory as well as a list of all RI Hospitals and their "amenities". Another good resource is Doulas of RI. If you haven't considered a doula I would strongly reccomend looking into hiring one. Their website is https://doulasri.org//. I hired Amanda Morin as my birth and postpartum doula and could not have had such an amazing experience with her.
Good luck and congratulations!
I used Kathy Tirrell at Newport Hospital, with OBGYN associates in Newport. Things didn't go exactly as planned (I did end up with pitocin and an epi, but with full consent). Newport Hospital is BEAUTIFUL and very well-suited to natural birth. Every room (there are only 10 rooms) is a gorgeous suite with a view of the ocean, they have a stocked kitchen and my room had a pull-out couch for DH. They even do waterbirths!
Kathy is a no-nonsense person, not really the "earth mother" type, and we totally clicked. I was very impressed with how she treated me like an equal adult, and made it clear she was working for ME. She continued to handle my care when other midwives had risked me out (I have some chronic health issues).
Another doula recommendation is Jenny at Belly Up:
