Potty training questions

DS has been doing really good the last 2 weeks or so. Keeping undies and pull up's dry at home day and night.  At daycare is hit and miss. I am not sure that they remind him or if he tells them he has to go like he does with us.

So at what stage do you condider them trained?

And when do they stop telling you loud as can be that they have to go?

DS will pretty much yell "I have to PEE" or " I have to poop" .  We really encourage it now and we run in and go potty and have a big YEAH and he gets M&M for poop.

So how long do you keep those thing up for?

Re: Potty training questions

  • I considered K potty trained when we ditched the pull-ups. So we were day potty trained at home first, then day trained at school and we're just about to ditch pull-ups at night. So, I don't consider her completely trained yet. It's sorta like riding a bike for us. We are mastering one skill at a time with her.

K still has quite an urgent tone (and louder) when she notifies us she needs to go and we have been in underwear at home for 6 months. So I'm not sure when that will go away. I guess we are still too new ;)

I don't get all excited or anything any more when she goes. But I do tell her how proud of her I am every now and again. Especially for staying dry all night. She still sometimes asks for a marshmallow when she poops, and I will give her one if I have them. I figure at some point she will stop asking and if it carries on to her third bithday (quite probable at this point) then I'm planning to have her make rice crispie treats with her marshmallows and stop buying them for a while.

  • L has been day trained for almost a year now, and is very near night training ( I think he has a small bladder and is a very sound sleeper) and at times he still SCREAMS that he has to go, I'm not sure when that stops totally.

  • I consider them really potty trained when you don't have to constantly remind them and you have accidents less than once every 2 weeks or so...  Night is a different story - that comes easy for some kids and takes forever for others.  Ben has been day potty trained for well over 1 1/2 years and still not at night.  sigh...

Ben still announces whenever he needs to poop.

On the reward... I'd just stop offerring it and see if he asks for it.   I never did rewards so I don't really know.

Is he wearing pull ups during the day? If so, I'd stop that too.

  • He wears pull ups during the day at daycare but not at home. And we usually change to underpants once he is home from daycare.

He has been keeping the pull ups dry at night and asking to go pee first thing when he wakes up. But that is a no pressure thing as I don't expect him to get night time down yet.

I am amazed at how well he is doing. But we started out super slow just doing under pants a few hours a day at home on weekends, then full days at home and now pull ups at daycare and underpants at home.

At least if feels like he will not be in diapers forever.

  • I would ditch the pullups. It sounds like hrs ready. Maybe even at night. But my guess is that pullups at school are holding him back because he knows they aren't underpants. Try it for a week or two and see. I bet you're done.
