Charlotte Airport - is there a place to see the planes?

I'm picking my mom up from the airport in a few weeks and wanted to take John with me to "see the planes" but is that even possible? I'm sure he'd have a great time at baggage claim too but it would be nice to see the airplanes come and go.

 I understand why they changed the rules but I remember being able to go all the way back to the gates and look out the windows at the bags being loaded and the airplanes landing and taking off then being pulled to the gates. Ahh, the good 'ol days!

    Those were the good ol' days.  I remember senior year of high school, I was going on a class trip to London, and some of the parents took us to the food court before our flight. 

    Unfortunately now you can't get past baggage claim, but you could probably watch the planes from the Cell Phone lot.

    If you get there early or have time after you pick your mom up, you can drive in to "the overlook" and watch the planes.  Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is one of the few airports in the US that has a public viewing area like this. You can safely watch planes take off, land, and taxi to and from runway 18C/36C. I think your little one would love to check it out if you've got time.
