Prenatal Vitamin Q's

Ok so my Dr put me on Tricare Prenatal DHA One.  Only problem is that with my insurance it runs $50 a month.  I went to the pharmacy to make sure the price was right and the Pharmacist recommended Folcaps Care One.  It would be free with a prescription for it and he said that it had comparable DHA and Iron.  Went so far as to mention he would ask to have his wife put on it.  He did mention that some OBGYNS are fussy about what prenatals they put you on, would it be rude to ask to be put on a different one??  What are your thoughts on switching and is anyone on either of them??

Re: Prenatal Vitamin Q's

  • I had no idea you could get a prescription for prenatals! I've just been buying mine. $36 for a months supply at my local health food store. At my first appointment all they did was ask if I was taking a prenatal. Didn't seem to care what brand.

I don't think it would be rude to ask to be switched to a cheaper one... it seems no different then asking for generic antibiotics.

  • I think if they are comparable to the expensive brand then I would absolutely ask to be switched.

You mentioned the DHA and Iron were the same amount...what about the Folic Acid?!?!

  • Sorry, folic acid is the same too :-)

  • Yikes! And I thought my 90 day supply of Nature Made Prenatal + DHA were expensive.....(they are only $17). I would try and switch if it is too expensive.

  • I would definitely call and switch. I would mention to my OB the pharmacist's recommendation and ask for a Rx.

  • Definitely check with your doctor and ask for a different type. And for all you other ladies that dont have prescription prenatals.. call and ask! I got a prescription and its $4/month at Kroger and it has more folic acid and other vitamins than you can get OTC. OTC stuff works and if thats what you want to use, thats perfectly fine but definitely check with your doctor and get a pill that works for your budget and your baby :)

  • I feel like all vitamins are the same if you find one you like as long as you are getting enough folic acid and they have the same stuff in them you should be fine.

  • For $50 a month I'd call my doc and ask for a script for the other prenatal.

  • Yeah definitely switch.  I have just been taking the target ones and they have 800 mg of folic acid.  I'll take them to my first appt. and make sure they are good enough.  I thought it was weird that when I made my appt. they didn't mention anything about getting a prenatal.  It was a new doctor for me.

  • I would ask.  It's not like you're being critical of his decision.  It's a financial issue that he should understand.  I've been on Prenatal Plus for a long time and pay $10 a month through my insurance.  It can't hurt to ask.

  • With my insurance I get free generic scripts, so I asked for a brand that came in generic as long as it was equally beneficial.  She said there are a ton that are basically the same thing, and that she gives people different brands all the time until they find one they can swallow and causes minimal nausea or problems.  Hopefully your doc will be understanding!
