October babies = extra year of daycare

My mom just informed me of the nice little detail that unless my kid comes a few days early, we'll be in for an extra year of daycare expenses! In my province, the school year cut off is September 30.

Is this something you've thought about?

Oh well, at least our kids should be among the more mature in their grades!

I think the cutoff is September 1st in my area. I thought about that when we first started TTC in 2009 and really hoped for a spring or summer baby. But after all the heartache over TTC, I now couldn't care less what month or day my baby is born, as long as I have a child who's healthy. I'll happily pay for an extra year of daycare at this point. Smile

Hm, for my county the kid has to be age 5 as of September 1 in order to enter Kindergarten. So it looks like I will miss the cut off by 2 months or so. I'm actually glad about it. I liked being an "older" kid in school for my grade, especially when I turned 16 and could drive before most of my friends! Sucks to pay for more daycare - but kids are expensive anyways!

I hadn't ever thought of that...not that it would have changed my mind about TTC.

DH and I move so often (we work in Construction) that I have no idea where we will be when LO is school age.

It's December 1st in my area, but they also offer a "Young Fives" program for kids not ready for kindergarten. It will depend on my child and if we feel they are ready to start at 4 years or wait that extra year. I wouldn't want to rush my kid to kindergarten if they would be stuggling their entire education.

I thought about that also! I think our cut of is Oct 20, and I am due the 22. I hope my baby doesn't have to wait another year to start kindergarten because they are 2 days to young! Hopefully it will work out!

We were actually TTC for a late september/early october baby. There's a whole theory about older kids in school grades who do better in life because they were the oldest in their class. It's called "The Outliers." I mean, that's not the only reason, I was always the oldest in my class, and it was fun getting my DL first and turning 18 first, etc. So think of it as a blessing!

I started Kindergarten at age 4. and was NOT the youngest in my class by far! I have friends who are 3-4 months younger than me.

DS is a January baby...so he'll be 5 1/2. If this one goes to term, he/she will be closer to 6!

Even if you have a summer baby not all kids are ready for school right at five. I think it is great having another year to get them ready! My DS was born Oct 4 and in standardize testing is in 97 percentile for his grade. my DD is Aug 11 and we held her back even though in preschool screening they said she scored well enough to enter, it was just on the lower end. I felt she wasn't on the same level w/ DS when he entered school. DD has really blossomed over the fall and winter in pre-k(3rd year). I know I did the right thing. My sis is a teacher and she says she has seen a lot of kids struggle trying to play catch up. They always have advanced programs if you kid is over achieving, but if they struggle it can really hurt their self esteem.

I was a summer baby so always youngest in my class. I thought about how this baby would be older and maybe that would be a good thing anyway. DH says he is fine with it since it will be better for sports

I hadn't even considered this. But thanks... because I had no idea what my state's laws were: "Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before August 31 in order to start school in the fall, by Delaware State Law. "

While timing mattered not at all to us, I am actually pleased that our child will be one of the oldest in his or her class. I think those extra months can make a big difference in strength and maturity.

My husband and I are both small (okay, my husband is short and I was a late bloomer) so I think it will be a good thing that our LO is one of the older kids in the class. Hopefully, he/she won't feel left behind by their more mature classmates.

I think that it will be a good thing.

I plan on doing a lot of school prep at home and will sending our 5 almost 6 year old to school reading and writing is going to be a benefit for them I also think that an extra year in Preschool is going to help them.

my mom's in education, and that was actually the VERY first thing she said to me when i told her my due date--"you'll just miss the kindergarten cut-off date" (apparently oct. 1 statewide in NJ). to be honest, i'm hoping baby comes a few days early for precisely that reason. i started school at age 4 (turned 5 in december), so while i was always the youngest in my class, i was READY to start school then. (had to go to private school to do so, unfortunately.) i don't want to have to hold back my child if he/she is actually READY to start the fall he/she turns 5 (or pay for private school to get around the cut-off date), but whatever happens happens, i guess!

I will SAH so I didn't think about that, just the cutoff for school. I think kids are often better off being older when they start, especially boys, so I think it's fine. My brother was an Oct. baby and started kindergarten older and he was a phenomenal student, highly gifted. I'm sure being older did nothing but help him.

The cut off in my province is actually December 31st, so I will have the option to send my kid to kindergarten at 4. Will I take it? Not necessarily. My brother was born in October but wasn't close to ready at 4, so my parents held him back from kindergarten and he did great the next year! My husband is also an October birthday and he actually did kindergarten twice. Me and my husband will decide at that time whether he/she is ready to go at 4 or not.

I know different areas have different rules but Im an October baby and the cutoff was Sept but I actually went in a year early!!!! Actually twice because then when I moved in 4th grade to another state the cutoff was August 31st and they didnt push me back so I had no problems. Now will my baby get lucky is another story haha

In our area the kids have to be 5 before the 1st week of August, so ours will be almost 6 when they start school. I'm totally ok with that because I was always the youngest in my grade. When I started school I had been 5 for a week. I think there are a lot of advantages to being the older one in your grade! I'm sure all our little ones will grow up to do great things

I'm so thrilled to even be pregnant, that I could care less about stuff like this. That being said - as one of the younger people in my class in school, I am kind of glad my kid will be on the other end of the age group. Especially if my baby ends up being a girl.

Hmm, no. Hadn't thought about it. I am a December baby and they still let me go to school "early" (I had to actually do some testing to show I was ready). I am not sure what the cut off is here. I don't think it is Sept 30.

I consider this a blessing. I have seen so many parents start their children before they are ready, i.e. turning 5 while in kindergarten. They learn so much more than ABCs and 123s in kinder. At 4 most can't sit still and don't have the dexterity/motor skills that comes during 5. The only one the suffers is the child... a few months age difference is huge in kindergarten! Starting kids too early may work for the short term and save a little $ but, tons are advised to be held back. Parents often don't listen and when they get to 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade the difference really shows! Kids are learning more compkex subjects far earlier than we ever did. Also, if they are older and they are held back, they KNOW it! Some kids then struggle with their confidence. I am happy this choice is taken out of my hands...just in case I am tempted to make the wrong decision. On a side note...think way down the road...it would suck to start college as a child of 17.

I must be confused!?! Even if they go to kindergarden its only half day and first grade is still over at 3 pm. My work day does not end until 5 PM at least. I am guessing I will be paying for child care until my babies are in middle school.

Am I wrong about this? My plan was to keep our nanny until my kids are in junior high.

I'm a teacher, so that has crossed my mind. What bothers me, though, is that my cousin and a very close girlfriend are due in March and July. Although our kids will only be a few months apart, they will be in different grades in school. Ugh!
