I posted this during my second tri, but so much time has passed that I have misplaced all the wonderful recommendations everyone gave me.
I delivered my baby boy at home and therefore did not have the option of having him circumcised at the hospital per normal routine. My midwife and pediatrician are not too keen on it (not opposed to it - but they don't have a lot of patients who get it done), so they don't have much in the way of recommendations for us.
Can someone recommend qualified urologists or mohels in the Anne Arundel county or Baltimore area? We are not Jewish, so we do not need someone who is going to do the full ceremony - we just want someone who is very competent and perhaps whom won't break our bank if insurance doesn't cover (which I'm assuming they will not). We are willing to take the baby to the practitioner's office if that will save on costs, but if it is the same price either way - of course, we'd prefer someone who will come to our home.
Baby boy is two weeks old tomorrow, and I know that this needs to be done within 30 days or the complications rise.
Re: Circumcision recommendations Baltimore and AA County
Not trying to start an argument I promise. (I understand that everyone needs to do what they feel is right for their family). But I did have to chime in and say that there isn't any medical reason to circ an infant. That is why some insurance companies don't cover it as they consider it a cosmetic procedure.
In answer to the OP I don't have a recommendation for you but I would check all recommendations as I know two people who almost lost their sons due to botched circs.
It kind of does sound like you are trying to start an argument. I think most people know the benefits and risks of circing here. To some, it is a religious ritual and there is no question about doing it or not.
She asked for recs. I just really don't see the point of your post except for trying to push buttons.
I work in the insurance field and circumcisions are a covered expense if you were to get it done by a hospital or in network doctor (for most carriers), it is a covered medical expense, even if it's not "medically necessary". I was just trying to give advice that financially, a mohel may not be the best option if you are looking for insurance to help.
If it doesn't matter, the mohel that we are using did my nephew's bris and did a wonderful job. If you decide to go that route, let me know and I'll get you the contact information. I'm not sure if he does non-Jewish circs or not.
I know that some people (Jewish, Muslim) get it done for religious reasons. I was just saying that it isn't medically necessary. I wanted to make that point bc some people have bad/old information that it is when research (as well as the AAP) now says the opposite.
Thanks for the recs and please keep them up. We would like to go through insurance if possible to keep costs down, but if it turns out insurance doesn't cover - then I know mohels will come to the house and usually the docs will not. So both recommendations are welcome.
As an aside, I am a licensed health care provider myself and am an in-network provider with the same insurance provider I have coverage through. While circumcision is not medically *necessary*, there *are* documented medical reasons to get it done - therefore it is not purely a cosmetic or religious procedure. I appreciate the concern, but we have researched both the medical pros and cons and have family members with OB medical experience that have seen repurcussions both ways. We are making our decision fully informed.
Here is a great article from one of the doctors that sat on the AAP's task force to investigate the medical pros and cons of circumcision: https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/118/1/385
I think an interesting "supplemental" link to go along with the link to Dr. Edgar Schoen's article- is this video of an episode of Penn and Teller's "Bullshit" which features the good Dr. himself... The entire video is about 1/2 hour, but Dr. Schoen makes an appearance by the one minute mark. I think he shows up again around the five minute point.
This video is graphic, sarcastic, biting and sexually explicit. There are curse words, dildos, penises, diagrams and videos of actual infant circumcisions... ok... that's my warning- it's a rated R cable TV show. It's also almost funny.
