WDYT? CNA maternity leave

Im a CNA as of right now and I do home health care ( basically what a CNA does in a nursing home but go to clients houses and help with basically any needs of the client ranging from showers to house work). I was just talked to my boss about maternity leave and she said because Im considered contingent(sp?) I can have as much time off as my doctor and I see fit and they will keep me in the books until I return. Although its not a back breaking job some of my clients require more than others (physically) and Im starting to get shortness of breath and my belly is quickly expanding.

I was wondering what you ladies would think would be a tasteful time for me to bow out with out looking greedy of my leave to my boss? or when do you think it would be healthy? or any of you ladies in this field? What are your plans?

Oh and Im 24 weeks if that helps.

Thank you! :)

Re: WDYT? CNA maternity leave

  • I would ask my obgyn how much I should lift at this stage in pregnancy. In all likeliness he/she will say 15 or 20 lbs, so definitely not helping a person out of bed. Don't worry about looking greedy. Worry about your LO.

I'm staying home through my pregnancy. I do light work. I usually work in the clerical field, and sitting kills me more than standing for short or long periods of time. I  was a temp, so walking away was easy, and I can go right back to it. My MD is putting me on temporary disability for sciatica exacerbated by pregnancy.

I would say keep working if you can limit how strenuous the work is. Maybe have someone else take over the less mobile patients. If you cannot pick and choose, then go on an early maternity leave.

I know women who kept doing tough work during pregnancy, and the injuries it caused to their bodies lasted many years after baby (one of them is on permanent disability for back pain). Take care of yourself. Hope this helps.

  • I think it is definitely ok to go on leave now because of what you do. My OB says 35 pounds is the limit (which is good because my 14 month old is 20 pounds so I can carry her around). I'd be afraid that if you went somewhere someone could end up needing help that you might not be able to provide (if that makes any sense).

  • im a cna too, and im continuing to work, but im backing off some harder clients, just keeping the ones i can handle..im planning on working as close to my scheduled c section as i can.. my dr still gave me permission to continue to work with no concerns..i think u need to listen to your body and dr.. good luck
  • I do the same thing, where I work at a nursing home they call us Health Care Aide's though. I'm in Canada too so I get a year of maternity leave anyway, but I'm already finding that I tire out more easily with some residents than I did before. I'm going to try working until the end of May or beginning of June depending how I feel though. I don't know if that's around the time you want to start your mat leave either but if I was you I'd probably return back to work after Christmas sometime so I could enjoy time with baby and hopefully get a nice schedule going.
