Rolling over IRA...recommend your online brokerage?

So, I'm hoping there might be an SAHM or two who has crossed this bridge before and might be able to offer a recommendation. I need to rollover my retirement savings, but I have no idea how to go about researching these companies. A few that I'm considering: Fidelity, Vanguard, and T. Rowe Price.

I would like to be able to complete the process online and be able to manage my money that way, as well. I have just around $40k to invest and planning to stick to a traditional IRA. (We just wouldn't have the funds to front the taxes on a Roth right now.) Also, we are not planning on adding to my IRA for at least the first year or so that I am at home. Instead, we will focus on building our savings, DH's retirement and a college fund for LO.

Does anyone use these online companies and if so, would you recommend it? Do you have another company which might be better?

Thanks in advance!

  • I rolled my 401k into a Vanguard IRA and have no complaints. I don't know a lot about the other companies for comparison's sake (fees, returns, etc.). The process was really easy and my account has done pretty well since I rolled it over.

  • We have Fidelity.  We really like them.
  • I have Vanguard, and their online system is very easy to use.  You can manage your money on your own or set it with one of their target retirement recommendations.  Also recently, I rolled over 2 previous retirement accounts, and their customer service was great on the phone.

  • I have one at Fidelity and Vanguard.  Both have lower fees and are good options.  Clark Howards website has some info on rolling usually.  I slightly prefer vanguard
  • I have my rollover IRA in a Vanguard Target Retirement fund.  I would recommend Vanguard for their consistently low fees and wide variety of investment choices.  And they're even better now since they recently lowered the required investment amount for their Admiral (lower-cost institutional) shares.
